Spencer: Money played big role in election
Former prime minister Baldwin Spencer said the Antigua & Barbuda Labour Party’s (ABLP’s) delivery of “largesse” to the electorate played a major role in the party’s victory over the now opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) which he, Spencer leads.
“Money played a big role in the outcome of this election and unfortunately we didn’t have that kind of largesse, the other side did and they used it to very good effect … We couldn’t match them and quite frankly I don’t think there was any desire on our part to do that anyway,” Spencer said.
But, a number of electors who immediately responded to his comments on yesterday’sOBSERVER AM programme, disagreed with the suggestion that voters were bought.
“Spencer and his party are still in denial. The fact is the UPP failed this country and the young people miserably. Money or promises had nothing to do with it,” one contributor said.
Another indicated, “The former prime minister needs to realise that many persons voted against them because they lost their humility. People got frustrated because they appeared not to be putting the people first and they had become rather defensive/arrogant when addressing pertinent issues of concern.”
A third comment was “they (the UPP) forgot the business sector and alienated the grassroots UPP supporters,” while the comment that followed was “this slow malaise that has typified the UPP, they still cannot shake off and I strongly believe if they cannot get themselves in gear and fix this, they will continue to lose elections in the country.”
A male caller added, “(Mr Spencer) can’t tell me he’s in power and another party out of power for 10 years had organised themselves so much and had more money. The truth is they did not organise for last election and labour party bang dem out.”
