PM Browne Holds Bilateral Meeting With Chilean President

Prime Minister the Honourable Gaston A. Browne this morning held a bilateral meeting in Brazil with the President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet. The meeting was held at the Chilean embassy in Brasilia, and the Chilean president acknowledged Mr. Browne’s role as the chairman of CARICOM.

Both leaders pointed out that they had been recently elected, with President Bachelet coming to office in an election in March. The relations between CARICOM and Chile were highlighted, especially the programmes of cooperation that have been established between both sides.

President Bachelet emphasized that, while Chile and many of the CARICOM member states were not similar in size, in fact quite often they faced similar vulnerabilities. The earthquake of 2010 was mentioned, as well as the more recent challenges that required extensive disaster management.

For his part, Prime Minister Browne spoke of the current economic climate facing many of the member states of CARICOM, and both leaders discussed in some detail the policy initiatives being undertaken by both governments to address the situation.

At the bilateral level, PM Browne reviewed the technical cooperation programme between Antigua & Barbuda and Chile and discussed ways in which these programmes could be expanded

The Prime Minister also sought the cooperation of Chile in the design and establishment of a venture capital fund for small and medium enterprises in Antigua & Barbuda. He explained that the biggest challenge faced by the small business sector was access to capital, and that the venture capital fund would be a direct response to these challenges.

The President of Chile also extended an invitation to Prime Minister Browne to make an official visit to Chile at a time that would be mutually agreed.

Both leaders also agreed to convene a meeting of the CARICOM-Chile Joint Commission before the end of the year where these initiatives could be further developed.
