DumzTree Cook-Off Challenge
As the summer begins to sizzle, DumzTree Family, a social club from All Saints Village, is getting ready to host their inaugural Cook-Off Challenge – The Home Chef Edition – at the Ffryes Beach this Sunday as part of their carnival calendar of events to raise funds for community projects and club development.
The event, which is dubbed My Chef Is Better Than Yours, will see four teams; three persons per team, competing in a make shift kitchen on the beach to produce their best meals to the judges based on the rules as the judges will be looking for originality, taste, presentation, texture and sanitation.
The teams boast a collection of talented individuals within the group with excellent home-taught culinary skills to amaze any food enthusiast.
The teams that will be competing for the title and bragging rights are Team Mohawk with leader Troy Sylver Byrne, Ranja Christian and Clydie Joseph. This team is known for their home taste gourmet approach to cooking so we can expect some great tasting food from them. Team Biggies Small with Kenneth Mozo Anthony, Nigel Rusty Sheppard and Brainard Pope Watts. As the name suggest, these guys love to eat good food and they too can whip up many dishes whether it’s local or global. Team Knock Hard with lead chef Albert Pat Browne, Anjis Anthony and Orville Spoony Davis. This team is a strong contender in winning the title but they will need to remain focus throughout the competition. The fourth team is an all-female team and they are called Team Sweet Dumz. The team is led by Derry Philo, Sonnette Russell and Sherry-ann Kirby. These ladies are bosses in the kitchen, however, who feels the heat knows it so we will see if they are triumphant.
Although it’s an 11am to 7pm event, the cook-off challenge will commence at 1:30pm and each team will be allowed two hours to complete their dishes then present to the judges a three course meal from the ingredients set out before them.
Albert Pat Browne, President of the club and leader for team Knock Hard, said, “We are really excited about hosting such an event mainly because of our passion for the culinary arts. Food is essentially the main ingredient that brings us together as a family so the teams are motivated and amped about winning the main prize of a stove all courtesy of Courts; one of our top level sponsor.”
If producing four three course meals isn’t intimidating enough, there is also another challenge for the chefs where they all will need to prepare a dish on the traditional coal pot.
Albert continued, “Not many people can light a coal pot and produce a great tasting meal using the instrument so we wanted to make sure we challenge the chefs so they can take it to the next level and raise their game; I do believe we will get some excellent dishes from the teams. So we are encouraging everyone to come cheer for their favorite team.”
Food will be cooked and ready for sale by midday and there is an impressive menu with a variety of meats, sides for anyone to choose from. The event is positioned as a family fun day on the beach with bounce castle, music entertainment, domino competition and five-a-side football tournament.
This Sunday is a big day in the sporting world as the world cup final will be top of mind for all sports fan, but according to the DumzTree team they are planning to air the final match which starts at 3pm.
The supporting partners for the cook-off challenge are: Courts, A.S. Bryden & Sons, Hutchinson Ltd, Takumi Media, Karib Cable, Island Provision, Best Cellars Wines & Spirits, Christo’s Supermarket and Digicel.
