Caribbean must recommit to vision for tourism industry – Doty
Outgoing Chairperson of the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO), Beverly Nicholson-Doty, has urged the wider CTO fraternity to recommit to the regional vision for the industry which provides the platform for success for the people of the Caribbean.
In her parting address Wednesday, at the official opening of State of the Industry Conference (SOTIC) 2014, Doty, who also serves as USVI Commissioner, reminded delegates that the Caribbean remains the most Tourism-dependent region in the world.
“I believe we have all come to understand that, recognising our strength as a region depends greatly on our unity.”
“The role of the Caribbean Tourism Organization is critical as the industry leader for the region. We should never forget that our greatest asset is our diversity and it should serve as a bond not as a divider,’ she remarked.
Doty said it is important to acknowledge the work of the CTO staff led by Hugh Riley “who managed the region’s bread and butter industry amidst 19 ministerial changes over the past two years. In spite of this, the work is ongoing and continues to get done.”
The Commissioner noted that the rebranding of the Caribbean with respect to the British Air Passenger Duty, which allowed the region to be more competitive, is an accomplishment.
“The struggle continues to ensure Caribbean business from the British market grows, and that members of our Diaspora are able to come home,” she said.
The business session of the two day conference begins Thursday under the theme “Realising the Vision: Positioning Caribbean Tourism for Major Change.”
It will feature a keynote address,” Conceiving and Realising a Vision” by Alex Zozaya, Chief Executive Officer of Apple Leisure Group.
Among the topics to be discussed Thursday are Breaking Down the Barriers to Travel, Tourism Innovation and Enterprise: Private-Public Partnerships Implications and Using Big Data and Technologies for Growth: Understanding and Predicting Tourist Behavior.
