MIAMI, Aug 17 – The United States Coast Guard on Saturday offloaded approximately 900 pounds of marijuana worth US$800,000 seized from a go-fast boat intercepted close to Haiti.

The Coast Guard says the operation began late Tuesday, when a US Customs and Border Protection aircraft crew spotted a vessel off the coast of Haiti, near Cap du Mole.

On seeing a vessel from the Coast Guard, the suspected smugglers threw several bales of the contraband into the water and fled.

The bales of marijuana were recovered but the smugglers managed to escape.

The offloading of the drug took place at the US Coast Guard Base in Miami Beach.

The drug bust was part of a joint operation between the Coast Guard, the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), the Bahamas and the Navy from the Dominican Republic.
