BET Awards 2014 highest rated award show
Sunday’s live television broadcast of the 2014 BET Awards is still buzzing. The popular African-American influenced network aired its award show to the tune of a reported 7.9 million viewers. Reports have indicated the 2014 installment of the popular awards show became the highest rated cable award show of the season.
Not only did the BET’s Award show reel in cable viewers all evening but it also created a social media frenzy. A BET record of 11 million tweets were posted about the show, making for a “dominating Twitter” performance. The show took place at LA live, and was presented by AEG, Coca-Cola.
Twitter feeds about the show surpassed that of this years NBA Finals, Golden Globes, People’s Choice Awards, as well as the immensely popular Billboard Music Awards. Providing much more than a typical award show, BET presented comedian Chris Rock as host and included a variety of celebrity events.
112,488 people were in attendance for the star-studded affair. BET also loaded the main scene with special features such as taping of the 106 & Park, and special concerts. Special concert performers and some interviewed artists included Outkast, Mary J Blige, Trey Songz, and The Roots.
Rock playfully likened BET’s highest rated award show of 2014, to that of a “Black World Cup.” Incidentally the show did produce more viewers than any recent World Cup Games. One of the surprises of the night came with an unannounced performer. Singer, Chris Brown rocked the crowd on edge as he performed his hit single Loyal. Brown was just released from jail, shocking viewers across the country with Michael Jackson like dance moves.
Rapper Nicky Minaj may have started a potential beef with the up and coming Iggy Azalea. The eight-time BET Award winner left a special message for fans at the end of the show. “When you hear Nicky Minaj spit, Nicky Minaj wrote it.” The rapper, singer, and songwriter was proud to make sure the world is aware that she writes the lyrics to her songs.
While Azalea, who has recently become a rising star this year, has been criticised for rumours that she does not write all of her song lyrics. Minaj also appeared to be poking fun when the camera panned in on her during the performance of the Azalea’s smash hit, Fancy.
While the 2014 BET Awards Show did earn its highest ratings in history, the success did not come without obstacles. The show closed with a performance from the reportedly on the brink Jay-Z and Beyoncé; however the music power couple, were not actually in LA. Instead, a taping of one of their recent performances from their duo headlined stadium tour, On The Run, aired. Rumours also swirled about violent, deadly pre-parties affiliated with the award show but BET has denied any affiliation with such events.
