Good News In Tourism

Visitor-Arrivals-on-the-IncreaseTourism officials are sharing good news about visitor arrivals, as for the first time since the global financial crisis began in 2008, there has been an increase in arrivals from all the major sources.

The biggest increase in year to year figures for May has come from the US, which recorded 7.7 percent, followed by the UK with 4.7 percent and Canada with 3.8 percent. The overall increase was 5.6 percent.

American Airlines' daily flights out of Miami, and Continental's flight out of Newark were attributed as the factors behind the strong performance out of North America.  In addition, the introduction of Canjet charter flights out of Toronto and Montreal had a significant impact on visitor arrivals out of Canada with figures showing an 82.8 percent increase.

This is the first month for the year that has shown an increase in arrivals from the UK, officials noted. The positive results are especially encouraging given the challenges experienced in recent months. "The introduction of the Air Passenger Duty (APD) in November 2009, industrial action by British Airways cabin staff earlier this year and the recent air traffic disruptions in Europe have all contributed to the Caribbean losing some of its appeal for Europeans," a release said.

Colin C James, CEO of the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority, said, “There are clear improvements in the numbers compared to this time last year and we hope that this trend will continue. All overseas offices have raised the bar in terms of their sales and marketing efforts, which is precisely what is needed in these difficult times. The latest results show that our efforts are reaping positive rewards.”

Visitor arrivals year to date for May 2010 closed at 111,165, an increase of 1.1 percent over the previous year.

Pray Too is confused and need help

#5 Shawna » 2010-07-05 03:46

"Pray Too" is so confused that they cannot even stay on the topic. The topic is not your self righteous interpretation of christianity. The topic is "Good News in Tourism." What is wrong with that? Since we are at it, there is nothing wrong with jumping up during our cultural event. It is the behaviour while participating that is important. You need help to understand the Bible and Christianity. But then again you are too wrapped up in negative politics to spend time getting the help you need.

The Lord I know knows a fool, the wicked and the godless

#4 I Pray Too » 2010-07-02 08:52

Eric and Ice Tea,

The Lord I serve knows my heart. He knows the wickedness that pervail under the guise of the UPP and its followers who use prayers as a political cover to perform evils deeds. They pawn the church in the name of God. They join Pathfinders while jumping up in carnival. They use prayer and fasting in ST. Georges to cover election fraud, they declare holy war in the name of God while fatting their personal bank accounts , they lie to the people in the name of integrity in public office and they improvished they own because of self-hating mentalties. Remember that Lucifer was cast out of heaven, he existed next to God but he was a devil. So too the UPP has used morality to promote the politics of vendetta. There is no difference between the UPP's death list and its prayer list. Help oh Lord, deliver us from this Evil....

Mock the Lord

#2 Ice Tea » 2010-07-02 07:35

"Pray Too", please don't mock the Lord with your negativity. This is a positive thing for Antigua, but you are trying to make it negative because of politics. That's what's wrong in Antigua. Some people put politics ahead of their own best interest. If Antigua gets more tourists it's a good thing for people out of work, regardless of their political affiliation. Obviously you must be working and don't care whether or not some job opportunities open up.... Real sad!

Lord, remove the Myth

#1 I PRAY TOO!!!! » 2010-07-02 03:35

Dear Lord,

Remove the myth that an increase in visitor arrivals equal an increase in revenue stream and therefore a stronger economy for all to proper. Please let those wicked UPP folks whose failures are enormous and who must grap at empty vessels to make the most noise about nothing, to be trappled by the facts of history. Lorrd let them be defeated at the Courts and at the polls, hear our prayers, oh Lord!!!!!
