Two Students to Compete in Regional Essay Competition

Terrikia BenjaminAntigua John’s - Two female students have been selected to represent Antigua and Barbuda for the 2012 Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) Essay competition.

Fourteen-year-old Terrikia Benjamin of the Antigua Girls’ High School was selected from the senior category, while 12-year-old Ariana Joseph of Christ the King High School will represent the junior category. Benjamin and Joseph were chosen from a group of 12 students representing 10 schools.

Primary and secondary school students were invited to submit essays on the topic “What are the memories you would like a cruise passenger to walk away with after visiting your destination?”

Each participating school was required to submit to the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture its top essay in the junior or senior category, or for both categories. A selection committee comprising representatives of the ministries of Tourism and Education assessed the essays and selected the national winners.

Manager of Tourism Education Cynthia G Simon, Training and Awareness expressed thanks to the participating schools, with special mention of the principals, Language Arts/Social Studies Teachers, each participating student and his/her parents along with the Education Zone Officers.

She also commends the quality of the submissions and extends special congratulations to Benjamin and Joseph on being the national winners with best wishes for success at the regional level.

The essays by Benjamin and Joseph have been forwarded to the FCCA’s Selection Committee for final judging of all submissions from participating Caribbean countries.

The first, second, and third place winners chosen by FCCA will receive cash scholarships ranging from US $1,000 to US $3,000, and the schools they represent will receive matching amounts. The first place winner in each category will also participate in the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Conference in Curacao, from October 1st – 5th, 2012.

The FCCA’s annual essay competition aims to raise the awareness of tourism among Caribbean youth and is used by the Ministry of Tourism to complement its own tourism awareness programmes for school children.
