Video Shoot Angers Business Owners

Closure of Long StreetAntigua St John's - The video shoot for a Malibu Rum commercial that involved the closure of a major street in St John’s on Thursday severely affected traffic, and angered some business owners.

The video shoot, co-ordinated by the Ministry of Tourism, employed over 100 locals as extras and with the production team. It required the closure of Long Street from 7 am Thursday.

Spokesman for the Ministry Gerry Daniel said Antigua's selection as the location for the video saw significant amounts of money being pumped into the local economy.

“They employed some 100 people to work as extras as well as an all-local team of make-up artistes," Daniel said. "Additionally, they rented lighting and other equipment from local suppliers. Even some technicians got jobs, and I was surprised at the level of skills that we have available here in Antigua."

The ministry is hoping that the video will provide significant exposure for Antigua & Barbuda when it is aired in the United States and other markets.

According to Daniel, a production team of 40 people arrived in Antigua for the shoot, and hotel owners, taxi drivers, and other vendors will benefit from their stay.

But that was little comfort for business owners on Long Street, where no parking was allowed. Motorists who ignored the signs had their vehicles towed by the police.

One businessman who was particularly peeved was owner of ANICOL Insurance Company Salem Khouly, who described the matter as "inconvenient and unfair to the businesses on Long Street". He said what annoyed him most was that none of the businesses was told about the video shoot ahead of time.

“For years, we have had no problems with funerals on Long Street; we have always collaborated. But when my father came to open up at 7:30 this morning, the street was already blocked off," he said. "He did not know what was happening, and up to now (mid-afternoon) no one has said a word to us, or any of the other businesses along the street."

Khouly, who has close ties with the governing UPP administration, said he called Commissioner of Police Vere Browne, and General Manager of the Transport Board Harry Josiah to complain.

“The commissioner told me he had a right to block off the street, but I am not satisfied with that," Khouly said. "I have been trying to reach the Prime Minister to lodge a formal complaint."

He said the organisers had a responsibility to inform the businesses on Long Street. Khouly added that the problem was compounded when he thought the production work was done, and parked on the street.

“The production people should be responsible for paying the tickets, as well as the towing charges for everybody who received a ticket today,” he said.

When told of Khouly’s comments, Daniel conceded that the notification did not take place, and offered an apology to businesses and individuals affected by the activity.

I think you meant to say 'beliefs', just saying. In this country anything you say has to be said under a fictitious name for fear of retaliation. Khouly, the Police, the Ministry of Tourism, were all wrong for not doing their job properly and when Khouly called the head of police directly and it just goes to show what's really going on here. So the Police Chief tells you he has the right to block off the road, but you are not satisfied with that so you call THE PRIME MINISTER OF THE COUNTRY! Give me a break!

Its about time that those in authorities show respect to those whom they have the authority over.. the commission of police Vere Brown should have inform the business owners and operators within the affected areas of there intention in terms of closing off the roads and so on.... it is Salem's constitution right to support any political party of his choice.. and if he things that something is wrong it is also his right to express himself.... either against it or for it.............

In a situation like this, the police should have notified both the public and business owners at least three days in advance by posting fliers along the section of street to be closed. However, even if they waited until the last day to post the signs, the people should have obeyed them and not park their vehicles on that street-they deserved getting their vehicles towed away at their own expense because the police does have the authority to close any street at any time for whatever the reason.

These jokers

#11 It Is Me » 2012-05-18 21:31

The way in which they always talk about exposure for Antigua is a joke. the way they talk about a one day job for 100 people is a bigger joke. And are they saying that there is more economic value for doing a malibu rum commercial than what a whole downtown block of business people can do in the same day? Malibu have commercials from all over the Caribbean and you can't tell me which of the commercials was made in Jamaica, Barbados or Curaçao where malibu was started. Instead of talking foolishness they should be wondering how come we have Cavalier and we can't market it like how malibu is marketed!!!

Poor performance

#10 Businessman » 2012-05-18 17:52

You cannot expect better performance from apublic servant. They just don't know how to handle an assignment like this. They act as if the country uis theirs and therefore they saw no need to first liaise with the business community nor the general public. Even regular traffic was a total kaos. And that just because this public servant just didn't see it fit to liaison with the business owners and the general public. Now one would not know how much business is lost by the business owners for that day. And no one really cares. We really need to start setting the bar much higher especially for public servants.

Greetings folks, the comment made by the tourism official regarding the level of skilled techs, producers, actors, etc shows how out of touch that department is with one of the most crucial/critica l business when it comes to the promotion and advertisement of our Nation. To elaborate further, would be to dump a tub from the night soil wagon on his head from the second floor of one a businesses on Long Street and have the cameras rolling...Take 1, lights, camera, ACTION...the perfect scene for the opening to **....Some High Intensity Trash - Our National Leaders...
I for one, is not surprised that we have the talent pool from which to draw from to produce whatever in the field of cinematography, and do so to compete with any other production Internationally . However, as is the norm in our stupendous Nation, STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES...Proper cordination, would have benefited all parties involved, including the business owners...me garne, a auntie roachie teach me...

I have an objection about the comment made by the Spokesman for the Ministry Gerry Daniel. He stated:
"Even some technicians got jobs, and I was surprised at the level of skills that we have available here in Antigua."

You should be ashame to say something like that, obviously you don't have any optimistic thought about your fellow citizens to know that Antiguans are intelligent people but most of all Caribbean/Afric ans posse**elligenc e. If you and the government invested in its people and stop pursuing outside people to come to Antigua for labor purposes then you would see how much more intelligence is possesed in Antigua and Barbuda. Get to know you people and have trust in them.

It's good that Antigua is getting more positive exposure and production companies to utilize the beauty of our country.

As for the business owners not being notified ahead of time is something that could be agreed upon but for them to say the production company should pay for tickets or compensate for anything is ignorant. Business owners in Antigua over charge patrons and mek money everyday stop the whining its to benefit everyone as a whole.

It shows who has the politicians ears to basically pick up the phone and call a politician when your ego is bruised. You action Mr. Khouly speaks volume and validate exactly what poor people and hard working citizens have been stating for years. Politicians and people of authoritative positions will do anything for people with money. Mr. Khouly put your ego to the side you will make more money once you raise prices on citizens.

What is wrong here is that the PR department of ABTM(anu&bar ministry of tourism) did not do their job=no pay month end. This video shoot sounds like it pumping couple millions into the economy directly/indire ctly according to Gerry Daniel (being sarcastic here). ANICOL (Khouly) did not get the memo along with others on Long Street; because he felt like he was being screwed out of a days work he called the top cop and transport board..."when you big you large" but then they could not help so he went higher up the ladder to Mr. Doctor Doctor BS, and guess what; he was too busy to facilitate him....UPP jus full of confusion and they show it all the time Unprofessionali sm, thats what it is called all areas from TOP to Bottom...

I do not see anything wrong with event like these, this is a good thing. However, telling the public way in advance or as soon as possible would be awesome.

i would love Antigua and Barbuda to be a video and commercial heaven for business in the world.

Business men like you who get richer and richer off the government only speak out when things affect you personally. When injustice is done to poor people where is your voice then? Yes the business owners should have been notified of the business shoot as it was an inconvenience to their customers but parking a block or two away didn't hurt them. Shoot! We all could benefit from the exercise. And how could u condone people ignoring the "no parking signs"? This shows lack of respect for authority. Get it together khouly there are bigger issues to complain about WPP, fencing scandal etc.

This headline is not correct according to the information in the story. It is the lack of communication on the matter that angers the business people. The Shoot is not the issue.
