Isaac Takes Over Royal Antiguan

Ted IsaacAntigua St John's - Ted Isaac has been appointed general manager of the Grand Royal Antiguan Beach Resort.

This came after more than a decade in that role at the Jolly Beach Resort. He told Caribarena on Thursday that he has big plans to revive the 1980’s built hotel.

Isaac resigned from his position at Jolly Beach on “mutually agreeable” grounds with hotel management in January.

He told Caribarena.com on Thursday that his appointment at Grand Royal was deliberately kept under wraps for ethical reasons.

“Jolly Beach and I came to a mutual agreement," he said. "I have been there for 12 years, so we came to an agreement and I came to a different position."

Isaac said he is already discussing the 2012/3 winter season with tour operators.

He noted the infrastructure at Grand Royal is in pretty good shape considering its age, and all that is needed is a facelift. He was the assistant manager at the resort in the 1980s.

Isaac said there are some immediate changes necessary, but experience has taught him to move forward slowly in such matters.

“It needs some fine-tuning," he said. "It also needs some manicuring. It needs a new focus as to where we are going and how we are going to get there. That is what we are working on."

According to the new GM, everything will be evaluated, including a US$12 fee to access the internet.

Isaac intends to build on the resort's reputation for hosting conferences, and compound it with solid occupancy numbers.

“Initially it was a grand hotel," he said. "We had heads of state here. It has held some big conferences. It was a very elegant hotel, and it still is elegant."

Isaac would not give a time-frame, but noted that the rooms are in pristine condition, as is the furniture.

“Next winter already we have some agreements in terms of occupancy that we have to sign," he said. "We also have to do some marketing to get on track."

I completely AGREE AND MORE with STEAK ON THE GRILL and A STICH IN TIME, they seem to know very well the facts. If the last General Manager who work for Nicholas for 8 years was not able to turn aroun this decay/pristine property how is Ted going to do? perhaps he can borrow money from his old bossess and then get fire for doing a nice favor.

wondering part 4 of 4

No guests, no staff , no one. We asked the cab driver if the Resort was closed for repairs and he said no but also said very few people stay there. He menitioned that the resort was sold a few years ago and the new owners did not seem interested in advertising or keeping the place up. He also mentioned that he has taken tourists there who booked for a week or more who checked out the very next day. Not sure what is going on with this resort (you can tell at some point many years ago that it was really grand and beautiful) but it certainly would not be a place we would consider staying. Especially with the number of great choices in Antigua.

“We did not stay here but visited the grounds for a tour -- the resort is in disrepair and deserted”

We took a boat cruise with with Aqua Adventures which originates its sunset cruise from the Grand Royal Antiguan Beach Resort. We took a cab ride from the Galley Bay Resort (a wonderful place to stay) to the Grand Royal Antiguan Beach Resort on a Thursday around 3:30 PM and the first thing we noticed is that there was no one there. No one on the grounds, no one in the lobby or the restaurants, no one at the pool and only 4 locals at the beach (which was really beautiful and wide). It was really eerie. The place really looked deserted. We also noticed that the property was falling into disrepair with cracks on the walls and the grounds pretty neglected. At the end of our cruise it was pretty dark and as we walked outside we didn't see more than 5 rooms in the entire resort with any lights on. Nor did we see anyone in the lobby (which looked pretty interesting), bar or restaurant. Ctd.

Below are some Travelocity review of this property:

“Far from Royal”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2012 NEW
Quote:
My wife and I chose this hotel to stay and get married, so did my wedding party. Well words cannot describe the state of the hotel. It was probably Royal back in the 70's but far from it now and is in desperate need of a capital injection to revamp the place. The whole resort came down with a really bad stomach bug and we nearly cancelled our weeding as my wife to be fell extremely ill. no one at the resort could careless and even to this day my wife still suffers bad stomach pains. This is more than likely from the fact that birds land in and around the outside food area. They carry a fatal desease which can be contracted by humans. Choose carry fully before you decide to stay here. Mexico is much nicer and a lot newer.

Why is Mr. Isaac in denial? It seems this is a characteristics of UPP supporters. You can smell rotting wood, when it rains and you are at the property. If the plan is to simply paint over decay, Ted is fighting a losing proposition. The current owner agreed to major renovations in his agreement to purchase this property and was therefore given a discounted price. Its seeming as if there was no performance clause to force Issa Nicholas to do what the government claimed he agreed to.

Dont Charge for Internet Use

#8 Mike » 2012-02-17 12:24

Please dont charge US$12 for internet.

Do U know how many people choose a hotel simply because they have free internet. An average guest spends 5-7 days in your hotel and all they want to do is check email, research info on the country they are in, keep in touch with family and loved ones. I'm an avid traveller and if U dont have wifi, or charge for wifi, I just book another hotel.

The hotel will seem desperate for cash or just outdated if it charges for that service.

Isaac Tales Over Royal Antiguan

#5 Proud ANU Queen » 2012-02-17 09:51

Any venture that will bring employment to the citizens of ANU & Barbuda gets an "A" from me. However, I believe that the proposed US $12 fee for internet use is a bit absorbitant. Most hotels around the world offer free internet access to guests, so they may want to revisit that proposal. Instead of US $12, how about EC $10? The goal should be to encourage guests to stay and use the amenities at the hotel, not chase them away with what they may deem to be high fees.

Ted Isaac-Royal Antiguan

#3 SAM » 2012-02-17 07:58

Is he over 60? if so why are UPP fooling the people of this little Island of A&B. I thought that once you reach 60 you retire, UPP is doing it in the reverse, 60 and you are hired, Ted could be hired as a consultant, but to hire him full time. LET ME KNOW IF ANYONE ELSE THINK THE WAY I DO.

There was an agreement between the government and the people who "bought" this hotel? What have become of the discussion as to whether or not the purchase agreement was being adhered to by the buyer?
