Industrial Action Looms for Hotel Sector

MP Chester HughesAntigua St John's - Widespread industrial action is looming in the hotel sector if a pay dispute is not settled soon.

Over 400 hotel workers met with their bargaining agent, the Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union (ABWU), on Wednesday, and rejected a compromise suggested by Labour Commissioner Hesketh Williams.

Industrial Officer and MP Chester Hughes said the workers are demanding a $26 increase over a two-year period (2010-11), but the Antigua Hotels and Tourist Association (AHTA) is not prepared to go along with this.

The workers will not accept the labour commission's offer of $17 over the period. “They said it was better for him to have offered zero,” Hughes told Caribarena.com moments after the meeting ended.

The union officer said the workers are restive, but he recognizes the sector's importance to the economy, and there will be "no strike on Christmas". After the holidays, however, the ABWU will formally notify the AHTA of pending industrial action if the matter is not resolved.

Hughes also reported that any strike would not affect key hotels. “The hotels in the Barrett Group and Curtain Bluff will not be affected, as they are prepared to make separate arrangements with the union,” he said. Sandals has also indicated its willingness to arrive at a separate arrangement.

According to Hughes, the union does not accept that the hotels are unable to meet their workers' demands. “They can pay!” he said.

Do not be duped my fellow workers. Do not trust these union officials. How come is only now he wants to shut down the sector when we have been complaining about reduced work hours, incorrect service charge and ha**ment by security staff for so many years and he has done nothing? It is something he is looking and trying to use us to achieve it. Please go to work if the ABWU calls a strike. This whole thing is suspicious - especially the part where Antigua Resorts and Sandals want to do a side deal with ABWU. This proves that these guys getting free food and rooms from these hoteliers for years. Maybe AHTA is fed up of them and shut down their privileges but the other groups are willing to continue to feed them.

UPP did not make wrongs right!!

#5 Max F » 2011-12-22 13:20

Chester Hughes is Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Member of Parliament and also Officer of a Trade Union? He is a member of government (employer) and member of union (worker). This cannot be right. Only in Antigua can something like this happen. And the UPP told me they would have made all the wrongs right. What a joke! Give me a break!!

Ignorance & stupidity, just like the Liat pilots, the only thing they will succeed in doing is shooting themselves in the foot.

As Mr B often said Only in Antigua when faceing the worst economic crisis in recient history would some foolish union boss even think of calling a strike. Between the Liat union and now the hotel union we are prepairing to shut down the ecomony of the nation. What do we tell our children. Sorry we have no education system, no jobs, no future for you because we spent it all on ourselves and when we wanted more we went on strike and shut our own economy down.
The next time you hear people laughing at the stupidity of our nation, remember how we solve our most important challanges. Dumb animals know not to soil there own homes.
