Sandals Hosts Staff Awards

Althea Harrigan with GM Gerald ChristAntigua, St John's - It was a night to remember at the Lord Nelson’s ballroom on March 28, as the best team members were honoured at Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa on Monday night.

The staff strutted their stuff on the red carpet and smiled for the paparazzi as they were greeted by management. In a gala event extraordinaire, the nominees were announced and the winners were revealed after a rhythmic drum roll.

Althea Harrigan, in her black silky gown and elegant hairdo, was crowned Prestige Team Member of the Year for the phenomenal contribution she has made to the Bar Department.

“I am overwhelmed and overjoyed because I have worked hard at a job that I love for more than a decade and now I am being recognized by management in such a meaningful way,” said Harrigan.

She and other Prestige Award winners will now have the grand opportunity to become Sandals Resorts’ Ultimate Team Member.  In 2010, that honour was won by Sandals Grande Antigua’s Nasasha White who works in the Wedding Department.

Weddings Supervisor Lydia George who has been a member of the hospitality industry for seventeen years collected the coveted Supervisor of the Year award while Stewarding’s Cliff Thomas received the General Manager’s Star Award to resounding applause from the audience.  The award for the Department of the Year was copped by the Kitchen Department.

The management team participated in a dramatic presentation that featured music from the popular movie and musical “Annie.”  Hotel Managers Cletus Pancham and Matthew Cornall brought the house down as Shortchange and Vanilla Pudding.  As they rapped about life at Sandals Grande, the audience gave them a standing ovation.

For good measure, the Cutting Edge band closed off the session with their usual lively performance.

Tavia Surgeon from the resort shop was named most improved while her co-worker, Nyola Lawrence, was recognized as the most environmentally aware. Latoya Cabral from the bar received the most guest nominations award for the second consecutive year and Melissa Scholar from the Front Office captured the smile award for courtesy.

The Sandals Foundation Spirit Award was won by Housekeeping’s Gerda Baptiste and Joanne Defreitas from the Storeroom took away Financial Controller Award honours.  Padget Crogman and Belinda Bellot also took home awards. Bar Manager Orville Pusey celebrated with his staff as he was named the top manager for 2010.

Similar award ceremonies are being held across all 19 Sandals, Beaches and Grand Pineapple resorts as a part of a company wide initiative to recognize outstanding team members.
