Oprah Picks Antigua

Oprah Picks AntiguaAntigua is Oprah Winfrey's pick for the number one playground for billionaires. The renowned media mogul has a home on the island, and according to the list compiled by Forbes.com,

“When she wants crystal-clear Caribbean water and perfect palm trees, she returns to her playground on Antigua”.

Winfrey also owns a 60-acre home in Maui and a 42-acre estate in Montecito, California. The list was also featured on the Yahoo! homepage.

The Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority is quite pleased with the recognition. Marketing Manager Kimberley Bowers said,

“It is fantastic that Antigua can get this kind of endorsement by a celebrity of Oprah Winfrey’s standing. Her recommendations are taken very seriously by her numerous fans all over the world. This is great for Antigua’s tourism and we must capitalize on it whenever possible.”

Other notable celebrities with homes in Antigua include Eric Clapton, Timothy Dalton, Silvio Burlusconi, Giorgio Armani, Richard Branson, and Calvin Ayre.

love the island

Love Antigua, we are just an ordinary english family,we stayed at the scruffy Royal Antiguan Hotel twice, sad to see the state its in but it has the best beach. Loved Margaret who cooked us breakfast and AJ who drives one of the Taxi,s . Its sad to hear about the more violent side to the island which we were oblivious to.Just one thing ,each time we try to go through immigration we stand for hours in a hot room and swear we will never come again ,no excuse ,you know exactly when the aircraft arrive .So Oprah needs a break from criticism. Just Saying!

Why the insults?

#12 Fritz » 2012-06-12 09:00

Black people can be so rude to each other. Other people read these blogs too you know. It doesn't say much about solidarity when you insult each other like that. Oprah couldn't care less about any of you.

Yup, Oprah loves antigua and she knows it very well, why shouldn't she make those comments. After all, she arrives on her private jet and is handled by an FBO company (doesn't have to deal with the nightmare in the immigration & customs hall), then she walks a few yards to her waiting limo and is whisked away to the ferry, walks a few more yards then takes a smooth 5 minute boat ride across to Jumby Bay. Walks off the boat to another vehicle and is taken to her luxurious home where she enjoys her stay in 'antigua'. A few days later the whole process is repeated in reverse and off she goes back to wherever it is she came from. Yes indeed, Oprah Winfrey can definitely say that she loves 'antigua'.

Nice selective quoting and then jumping to a ridiculous conclusion. Oprah also described her California property as "Paradise" and both Silvio Burlusconi, and Richard Branson, who have houses in Antigua chose other places entirely.

I guess in the face of the skyrocketing violence and the SVC Truth Campaign, Antigua has to spin as best they can.

want to know

#1 fnpsr » 2010-03-30 00:18

It is nice to see these celebs build homes in Antigua, but I also hope they are paying their proportionate share of property taxes. It would be interesting to know, since this should be a matter of public record.
