Destination Wedding 2012 Goes Green

Destination Wedding 2012 Goes Green
Antigua St. John’s - For the first time in its six-year lifespan, the Antigua & Barbuda
Destination Wedding promotion has taken on the challenge of organising a completely “green” event.

The 2012 promotion runs under the theme “Live Greener, Happily Ever After”.

This year’s winners, Jacqueline Adams and Ronald Critchlow, were introduced to the Antiguan public on Friday as they received their complimentary wedding bands from Colombian Emeralds store.

The couple arrived on the island Thursday with immediate family members and US wedding magazine journalists.

Both said they were honoured to have been selected as the pilots of the first “green” event of this kind from the tourism authority.

Antigua is one of the few countries in the Caribbean where couples can get married and processed within 24 hours, a fact that has created something of a niche market in the tourism industry.

US Director of Tourism Derede Samuel Whitlock commended this year’s sponsors for their overwhelming support as she announced that all sponsors are also part of the
“green” promotion and will be offering exclusive discount packages that will run through to July.

She said this year’s couple are indeed unique in their own right and were the perfect candidates to carry the theme, since they both promote and live a green and simple lifestyle.

"They are a couple that are very conscious about the environment and so in planning their big day they wanted to incorporate some of those green elements to symbolise their commitment to the environment and creating a greener happier world for all of us,”
Whitlock said.

On hand for Friday’s promotion launch was CEO of the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority Colin James. He commended the life of the initiative and congratulated the lucky couple.

“

We are thrilled to host Jacque and Ron this year,” he said, adding that the initiative continues to be a partnership that seeks to promote Antigua & Barbuda as the premier wedding destination in the Caribbean.

Senior Environment Officer with the Environment Division Ruleta Camacho was also present at the proceedings and offered the endorsement of her office.

She announced that the Botanical Gardens would soon be self sufficient, and because it operated on 100 per cent green energy, would fit perfectly into the promotion. She also encouraged the newlyweds to consider the green approach of planting a tree on Antigua or Barbuda to signify their union and the life of their marriage.

“The Environment Division congratulates the couple and we would encourage more initiatives like this,” Camacho said.

Instead of a limousine procession, the newlyweds rode off on scooters after their wedding ceremony which took place at Nonsuch Bay Resort on Saturday.

Destination Wedding 2012 was sponsored by Nonsuch Bay Resort, Colombian Emeralds, Indigo Event Planning, Mingles Hair Salon, Cheke’s Scooter Company, Zia Photography, Quinn Farrara Liquors, ABS TV, and Philton’s Bakery.
