IT Teachers Get Training

Mako-Williams-Angmor.jpgAntigua St John's - The first introductory workshop for sixteen Primary School teachers on how to use ‘My IT notes’, a series that teaches Primary School students how to use a computer, was successful.

Mrs Mako Williams- Angmor, IT teacher at Sunny Side School wrote the series and hosted the workshop. The workshops will be ongoing.

Attendants gave the training session a thumbs up. Ms. Hector, IT teacher at Potter Primary school calls the series refreshing. “There isn’t a set curriculum on primary level in regard to IT and now all schools will be working on the same page. The material is easy to follow for the students. The teacher’s guide is a great source for worksheet ideas and how to execute lessons”, Hector said.

She adds that she learned a lot about the technical aspects of the computer as well. Her school is well equipped with 29 computers.

Last week Williams- Angmor presented “My IT notes” at Best of Books and the series were well received by teachers, the Minister of Information, the Hon. Dr. Edmond Mansoor, Minister of Education Hon Dr. Jacqui Quinn- Leandro and Director of Education Mrs. Jacintha Pringle. Potters Primary School IT Center

They all embraced the IT series and hope to introduce them in schools across the nation. Mrs. Pringle revealed that Green Bay and Villa Primary School are the two chosen pilot schools for “My IT notes”.

Also present at the workshop was Elmon ‘Smokey’ Benjamin the technician in charge of setting up and maintaining twenty government IT centers and five mobile IT busses.

According to him all the schools are ready for “My IT notes” in terms of equipment.”Eighteen schools have an IT center which holds 16 to 32 computers and there are 5 IT busses with 17 computers on board,” he explains.

He puts the rumors that certain schools like Antigua Girls High School (AGHS) are on the top of the list to receive government aid to rest. “Villa and Green Bay are schools in a ‘poor’ area and they were the first to receive an IT center in Antigua. AGHS only received theirs in 2011.”

Williams- Angmor points out that her books are not only for public schools but also for private schools and she is open to consult with anyone who is interested.

She ‘tested’ the books in her school since September last year and so far the parents are happy as the students have learned a lot. According to the author the students find the lessons clear and easy to follow. At the moment she is writing a teachers companion manual which will be finished by the start of the next school year.

Education and IT Strategy must be cerebrally joined and rolled out together for success to be realized.
