Digicel Considers 4G Technology for Antigua

Digicel Evaluates 4G TechnologyAntigua St John's - One of the telecommunications company operating in Antigua & Barbuda Digicel is exploring the possibility of introducing the new 4G technology across all of its markets.

The company issued a statement to Caribarena.com this week in response to questions posed by this news portal to General Manager John Delves.

Caribarena.com had asked about the company’s response to Telecommunications Minister Dr Edmond Mansoor’s threat to license another provider if the current players in the market do not give a written commitment by the end of November to introduce 4G.

While not answering the question directly, the statement said, "We note the minister’s comments and welcome his commitment to ensuring that new technologies that drive productivity and new ways of working and interacting are introduced to the people of Antigua & Barbuda."

The statement noted that the company is evaluating its plans for 4G across the region, and to date it has launched 4G services in several countries including Bermuda, the Dutch Caribbean, the Cayman Islands, and the French West Indies.

According to Delves, these services are based on HSPA+ technology, which delivers speeds up to 10 times faster than traditional 3G technologies.

The company also announced that the response to its new Digi-phone services has been very good.

Caribarena.com is awaiting responses from the other providers – LIME and APUA I-Mobile – to the minister's statement about the 4G upgrade.

Dadlison is exactly right, Apple is an extremely efficient company, wrapped in a marketing machine - as such, they successfully sell millions of products for which they have already sunk costs - maximizing profit - but not necessarily offering the best of what's available in a given generation. Sure, the iphone4 was the top of the line at time of release - but it certainly isn't now. To say, "because Apple isn't doing it, it can't be that good" makes no sense at all.

#11 What have APUA done » 2011-10-19 21:26

What have APUA done for us? We pay the highest electricity in the Caribbean. We have constant power outages. My bill keeps going up every month. My water is often so dirty I can't even wash my clothes let alone drinkit!

So all this talk of proecting APUA is foolishness. They are the worst run company in Antigua

By "intentionally withhold", you mean not invented yet, by anybody? Or else where are these super-phones with these new features? Google (android) doesn't have them, Blackberry doesn't have them, Microsoft, (is Microsoft still in business?) doesn't have them.

Whey dey be?

Where does Digicel commit to launch 4G, they just say they are evaluating their plans across the region. 4G is the same as 3G+, operators in America called it 4G as did lime when they launched it earlier this year in Cayman isalnds. So it is not true 4G, true 4GLTE is very different and Verizon in the USA have now launched in over 120 cities across the market. All operators were asked to respond and only Digicel actually responded to question from Caribarena. Surely this just shows that they respect jopurnalists and try and answer their questions

Doesn't xxnsxxr own shares in Digicel?, hence his push to put Digicel infront of Antigua's home grown product APUA, I hope Antigua people see through this one and say heck no, I am supporting what is mine.

Why does Antigua need 4G at this time?, as it stands 3G is expensive, some countries are just getting into 3G and these are large countries, so why the major push to put Digicel ahead. This should be a conflict of interest for Mansoor and he should be taken to task for it.

Don't make Apple fool you. They are half good products, half con job. They intentionally withhold features from their products so you will be forced to by the next generation in the following year. Its called planned obsolescence and they are masters of the art.

Pedro,

You hit the nail on its head. Mansoor knew all along that not only Digicel is about to introduce 4G but the other external provider will introduce 4G April next year. He will want to take the credit and want us to believe that it was his intervention that causes the providers to go to 4G. Where is IMoble in all of this, The Min of APUA, Baldwin Spencer, is such a disappointment that he will allow IMobile to be left further behind. The sooner A&B get rick of these clowns, the better it will be for the country.

Even better. My young son who is too small to blog read the story and asked. Dad are you surprised by Digicel's statement! According to him the ministry and digicel are in the "same bed" so they must share a similar G spot. I wonder what response the other major telecommunicati on's provider will come with in response to all this G. What String will they now pull. I hope they hit the Bingo jackpot also.

Mr Mansoor must have know abouthe 4G plan of digicel why he parody his verbal wand last week. Afterall the ministry and digicel all share the same G spot so it would be rather coincidental if he would have found it without digicel discovering it. Geez Mannn

OHHHH the games that Min Mansoor plays, but he fools no one I hope. We should all know by now that he was only grand-standing, Mansoor and by extension PM Spencer and the UPP government is bound hands and feet with their loyalty to DigiCel. APUA was obviously an unwanted child. The sad thing is that the APUA show must go on or APUA and the Country stand to lose hundreds of millions. The minister of PUA is definitely out of his depth. Antiguans and Barbudans pay spencer now and let him go.

Yet Apple, which could buy the so-called nation of Antigua and Barbuda out of it's petty cash account didn't think it's new iPhone needed to be "4G".

Kind of puts things into perspective, doesn't it!

This should only be allowed if they can bury the towers underground and guarantee that there will be no emissions from their underground towers. Otherwise they should embrace "5G" whereby signals are transported from village to village by donkey!
