App Development Seminar Planned

APUA imobileAntigua St John's - APUA imobile Presents Mobile App Development Seminar at ICT Fest 2011
APUA imobile has partnered with the Antigua & Barbuda Investment Authority (ABIA) and the Bright Path Foundation to offer a  two -day "Introduction to Mobile Application Development” seminar.

This will take place during the 7th Annual ICT Fest (October 12 to 13).

The course, a release said, will cover topics including user interface design and construction, input methods, data handling, network techniques, and URL loading. Participants will work on a project that will produce a professional-quality mobile application of the type used on a number of platforms including the Google Android™ and Blackberry™ (RIM).

This is the first initiative of its kind taking place during the ICT Fest, and APUA imobile has said it is excited to be the mobile partner in this venture.

This project is well aligned with the aims and objectives set by the mobile service provider as it aims to provide avenues for the further development of the people of Antigua & Barbuda in the field of information technology. Given the increasing popularity of the Android™ technology, skills in mobile application development presents endless possibilities.

Enterprise Development Director at ABIA Jacqueline Yearwood described the seminar as "an important component of ABIA’s thrust to empower the next generation of entrepreneurs and spawn homegrown mobile applications (apps) that are developed by and for Caribbean audience. It is a deliberate movement from a consumer to producer paradigm".

These courses will be facilitated by the iCan Mobile Labs App Development Program, which is an initiative of the Bright Path Foundation. iCan, the Indigenous Curriculum for Advancing Nations, is a Congress WBN initiative for delivering values-based training and creating a new, innovative approach to education and human development. Through the iCan Mobile Lab, Bright Path Foundation seeks to remove barriers that have traditionally blocked teens and young adults from learning to develop innovative technology solutions.

Registration forms can be collected at the imobile store on Long Street and returned to the ABIA on Factory Road, for the attention of Investment Promotions Manager Fitzmaurice Christian.

i was at the seminar and i think it was very good. it wasn't all about hard core development because, like dadlison said, there is only so much you can do in a short space of time. but what they did is empower the participants to see that they can get involved in producing apps and content, and not just consumption. on the second day they created four teams that worked towards producing an android app: there was marketing, design, content and development. so participants who don’t know how to write a line of code were involved and contributed to the app that they published. i think if we have more opportunities like this, things will eventually change.

@ Tenman - Improving Competitiveness

#8 John French II » 2011-10-11 19:50

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. Tenman, I feel your pain as you ponder the future and look for learning opportunities on the Rock. Many years ago, a friend had directed me to a study prepared for the World Bank. The World Bank is leading the charge with funding for ICT in the OECS and Wider Caribbean. The Minister should be advising the People of Antigua & Barbuda as to how we are accessing those funds and providing an annual accountability and performance report to the Nation. Follow The Money. Notwithstanding the lack of transparency, may I direct you to Chapter 5 of the Report viz: Improving Competitiveness and Increaasing Economic Diversification in the Caribbean: The Role of ICT. The report was commissioned by infoDev c/o World Bank and prepared by OTF Group, USA.

A Wa Ya! I saw the add yesterday for ICTFEST and what struck me is 2 of the 3 questions asked were about Mansoor. Who is the minister of information and who is guiding ICT Fest. Honestly I got the impression that this was all about highlight the minister.

Creating an entrepreneurial class is essential to the development of the nation. Apple is paying out over 2 billion dollars per year to APP developers, and that does not include the Andriod platform. So, yes there is lots of opportunity in the mobile computing market. Sounds like a great initiative to me, but I would like to see vision for this effort, and leaders who are going head up this thing. We need to expose our young people at an earlier age in schools to these things, and then identify the ones that have an aptitude for such things. We also need business and other professionals to provide mentorship, internships, and volunteer programs, and we would see positive results. But, of course we have be serious about planning and getting out information in a timely and professional manor.

Impressed

I am truely impressed with this idea. Empowering our people to start producing for our people has never been easier with the recent advances in web and mobile technology and I hope that citizens take full advantage of this seminar.

That being said mobile application development cannot be taught in a couple hour seminar and requires some foundation in software development. Hopefully this gets more people young and old interested in the field.

i'm not blasting mansoor and i'm also not political , he likes to be in front of everything making it look like most of everything is his grand idea so thats why i called his name .. so now u say he has a full team let me also put the blame on them for the same thing over and over and over ... ok u feel good now ... this is just my observation so don’t kill the messenger we all have our own thought and opinion ... One question to you, do you find it to be similar in nature every year? give me your honest opinion , that's all i ask...do have a pleasant day...

@ A wa ya how is it you manage to bring politics into this....Is Mansoor the only person participating in the ICT fest? There are full fledged teams behind theses types of events... they are the ones you should put on blast for have the same thing over and over and over and over.

no worries tenman , it’s the same thing they have every year, so its a bit redundant, mansoor is not really to creative.. this is year 7 and trust me its been the same thing over and over and over ask the young people questions they tell u chuupppsss its boring , it’s the same thing like last year, we are just here to lime and because the schools demand us to come ... so that are some of the feedbacks i got from school children last year so let’s see what happens this year ...

lets do better than this

Though I applaud such a seminar, its craziness to be advertising it days before the actual event. The publicity for this event started no earlier than this week. I am one who would have loved to attend such a seminar unfortunately the lateness it announcing it, has made it impossible for me to shift around my schedule.
