Antigua St. John's - Traditional media houses in the region would be making a monumental mistake by failing to embrace social media, president of the Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU) Vic Fernandes has warned.
He said it is possible for traditional on-air and online presence to have a harmonious relationship.
Fernandes was speaking during the opening of the 43rd Annual General Assembly of the CBU being held here.
He acknowledged that some social media cater to the salacious with little regard for accuracy, balance and, in some cases, decency.
However, he said members of the union must ensure they remain true to their calling while embracing change.
"We should not see new media as the enemy but as an opportunity for us to grow and to expand our industry, to reach audiences yet untold and to make relevant restrictive licensing regimes..." the CBU president said.
