Imobile Desperately Plead PM's Help

Imobile Desperately Plead PM's HelpAntigua St. John’s - Caribarena has received information that the frequency allocation issues that have put APUA’s iMobile in danger may have been more deliberate than initially deemed.

According to our information, on January 26th, 2012, a meeting was held between Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer, Minister of Telecommunications Dr. Edmond Mansoor, Telecommunications Officer Clement Samuel, APUA General Manager Esworth Martin, Head of APUA Telecommunications Curtis McKay, and APUA Financial Controller Roger Tonge.

During this meeting, it was clarified that no allocation of spectrum in the 700 Mhz band would take place until the ministry hears from APUA regarding the Authority’s needs.

However, in early to mid-July, Telecommunications Officer Clement Samuel denied Martin’s request for frequency allocation, noting the unavailability of the frequency band (class 17) that APUA requested.

So, despite promising APUA that no allocation of spectrum would take place until APUA informs the Ministry of Telecommunications of its needs, the Ministry consciously allocated to Digicel one of the prized frequency bands.

Meanwhile, Minister with responsibility for APUA Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer has been inactive on this issue.

Caribarena has been informed that the Chairman of the APUA Board of Commissioners, Clarvis Joseph, has pleaded for the Prime Minister’s support on this issue, given the grave consequences it could have for APUA.

Caribarena has received further information that APUA has begun making plans to contact the unions to inform them of the potential immediate retrenchment of over 150 workers.

Additionally, Caribarena has learned that approximately EC $4.5 million per annum is contributed to government services by iMobile.

Furthermore, the profits made by iMobile are instrumental in subsidizing the price of water in Antigua & Barbuda.

This means the closing of iMobile due to the inequitable frequency allocation may have a domino effect, causing the price of water and other public utilities to rise, while simultaneously reducing APUA and the government’s revenue.

There is also much to be said about the Government’s decision to give Digicel the frequency Band APUA requested, which will be utilized by the company in constructing their 4G network.

This 4G network is set to be the backbone for the Government Assisted Technology Endeavour (GATE) Project.

The GATE project will see thousands of citizens, including students, working on Digicel’s network.

The Plan

Who gives tablets to school children to do work? All they will do is watch videos and play games which is what you do on a tablet. You can't exactly do real work. But I guess its all in the plan, distract the fooly, poor blacks and while they are watching videos on their tablets, the young Mansoor's will be aceing all the CXC's and getting all the scholarships. Our kids will fail and then go to work for the same Mansoors. Only problem, by that time the tablets would become obsolete and there will be no replacement xxxxe. But since this will all take place beyond 2014 who really cares? Just take the tablet feel good for the next 2 years, learn nothing and give the vote to who gave you

The Plan

I see the equation: PM gives Mansoor what he wants for Digicel, Digicel rewards Mansoor by giving him 6000 tablets for the 'people', the people then reward the PM with an X and he wins the election. Can you see it? APUA 150 employees or 800+ employees does not quite add up to the 6000+ votes from the tablets.

Mansoor is your Massa...Clarvis just hush your mouth and behave - or else the cheese stop flowing!

Time you get some "balls" and lead your Company out on a strike! Baldwin must be made to chose publicly - between you and APUA or Mansour and DigiCel!

Barring that just continue to grumble under your breath in some dark bar over a rum and coke and a cigarette!!!

All I will tell you is that you have to understand the electorate AT THE CONSTITUENCY LEVEL. The priorities are not always the same my dear. If Baldwin was to lose government but won his seat and retired, what would his pension be Tenman? If Baldwin was to lose his seat, what would his pension be Tenman? Do you think how people look at "jobs" is consistent through every community in this country? If some people are "getting supported financially" do you think they think the same way about "jobs"? Read the tea leaves my friend.

Digicel will fund UPP Campaign

#20 Kyle Josiah » 2012-08-13 18:22

I can see through this as clear as night and day -- Digicel will be giving the UPP the millions of dollars needed for campaign 2013/2014.

Tenman, yes, the workers are always used as "bargaining tool" to the government! Sad that 150 workers at APUA is looking at "retrenchment," as they have no choice. They will have their "voice" be heard in two years! As for Clavis and the rest of the board and management, tell them to "tek dat!"

Bawling wouldn't help...want a stone to wipe your tears?

#18 Dig It » 2012-08-13 11:49

How can the APUA Chairman bawl-out to the PM for help for iMobile, when he well knew it was in danger to Digicel, the moment Dr Mongoose became Minister of IT? Hmmm, they were "warned" about the "powers" of that the "unelected" politicians! Let me cry because they will be getting "stone" to wipe their tears, when their "role-and-posit ions" in government will be "diminished" to the lowest degree! Can't these so-called "smarty-pants" see that the PM doesn't call the "shots" in\around these islands? Amazing that they allowed "money-and-infl uence" to make decisions on the part of the people that have "no-say" in anything!

#11 upp » 2012-08-13 09:40

All Dr Mansoor wants is to get rid of APUA so Digicel can take over and owned APUA... As long as dat happened Dr Mansoor and Digicel xxxxx will get bigger and government workers suffer more. Antigua is the only one in the Caribbean that owns a utility company. Antigua is the only in the Caribbean that owns a telecommunicati on company. And it belongs to the GOVERNMENT and Dr Mansoor is in the government..... So why he doing this to APUA.... Dr Mansoor know what APUA-imobile can do to beat Digicel in Antigua that's why he keeping APUA down

Quote:
Additionally, Caribarena has learned that approximately EC $4.5 million per annum is contributed to government services by iMobile.
Is this revenue or net profits? Due to APUA's unwillingness to release its audited financial statements the public has no real information on the body's financial health. I find it impossible to defend a company which prefers to operate in the dark, yet tell me I am a share holder. In addition, APUA workers must feel like hostages since they are always used as a bargaining tool in an attempt to get government to bend.
