Antiguans 2nd in Ericsson i-Create Competition

Ikenley Francis and Fana Allaway were recognized during a ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in MiamiAntigua St. John’s - Two employees of Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) were awarded second place winners in the prestigious Ericsson i-Create Mobile Application Competition facilitated by Caribbean Association of National Telecommunications Operators (CANTO).

Mobile application developers Ikenley Francis and Fana Allaway were recognized during a ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Miami, Florida on Monday.

Their submission, “Antigua Directory”, targets the tourism industry and its creation is in keeping with APUA’s recent rebranding which seeks to realign the utilities provider as a brand that facilitates consumers’ lifestyles.

“Antigua Directory” is geared towards making more efficient and accessible information available to Android phone users.

The duo’s prizes included $2,000 in cash, two net books and one month’s internship with Ericsson. The cost of their travel and accommodation in Miami was also included in the package.

“Being able to achieve second place in the i-Create competition shows that I can do anything if I put my mind to it,” Francis said of his success. “It shows that I have potential to do a lot of things for Antigua and Barbuda.”

Allaway, on the other hand, said: “This competition was not only for my personal benefit, but to show others that although we are a small island, we have a lot of talented individuals and Antigua and Barbuda will continue to succeed in the CANTO i-Create Competition and many others to come.”

CANTO is the leading trade association in the ICT sector for shaping information and communication in the Caribbean.

In a release, APUA acknowledged the achievement as a significant moment for the company and for Antigua and Barbuda on a whole.

“Mobile content continues to take on great importance globally and to have talent such as this recognised on a regional scale positions the company and the nation as leaders in the application development arena,” it commented.

Congratulations to these two young people. This only shows that there is great talent here locally and also at the same Company which Mansoor is trying to sink.
