Govt Appoints New Telecom Consultant

Minister Dr. Mansoor and Daryl JacksonAntigua St John's - Daryl Jackson has been appointed telecommunications consultant in the Ministry of Information, Broadcasting, Telecommunications, Science & Technology.

Jackson, who was once COO at Cable & Wireless’ Eastern Caribbean operations, and who also holds a Master of Science Degree in Sustainable Energy Systems, will assist the Telecommunications Division in ensuring a successful transition from a monopolistic international direct dial regime to an open and competitive one.

Minister with responsibility for Information, Broadcasting, Telecommunications, Science & Technology Dr Edmond Mansoor said “with the impending conclusion of LIME’s monopoly on international direct dial calls, it is very important that an effective and competitive marketplace is ensured. Safeguarding customer interests and fostering the long-term development of the telecommunications sector is also very important.

In this regard, Mr Jackson will be complementing and supporting the work of the Telecommunications Officer.”

The Ministry of Telecommunications has already begun a series of consultations with telecommunications companies that are going to be providing international direct dial telephone services after LIME’s monopoly on this segment of the sector comes to an end on July 1.

Minister Mansoor said, “We are collaborating closely with the telecommunications providers to ensure that Antiguans and Barbudans can benefit from a totally competitive sector."

This Minster seems to have forgotten we are under the IMF's hand. Every week he seems to be employing somebody in his Ministry with large salaries. Whatever happened to attrition in the NEST Plan. Was'nt Clement Samuel and the gentleman from Jamaica employed to do something along this same line?

Third world ...is not a nice name. Especially while being at the bottom of that moniker.

But, really now, the current situation is horrible. With this goal of introducing 'true' competition, I can only say ... show me soon.

When are we getting number portability? Creating a competitive environment means absolutely nothing if we are tied to a specific carrier. In 2012, there is no acceptable reason for me to change my number if I wish to change my cellular service provider.

As a business person, my number is on my letterhead, on my business cards and in my signature which is affixed to the many e-mails that I have sent out. If I am unhappy with the level of service of my current carrier, my only option is to change my number and go with another carrier.

The telecomm companies are content with this arrangement because they can basically hold us hostage, and we have no option but to grin and bear it.
