Antiguan Olympic Athletes Ready to Compete

Antiguan Olympic Athletes Ready to CompeteLess than 24 hours before team Antigua and Barbuda competes at the London Olympics, report from the camp is that the mood of the athletes is very high.

Chef de Mission Neville Fenton says the mood in the camp is very high and exciting and the athletes have settled in and are doing their regular training.

First up will be swimmer Karin Clashing in the 50m freestyle and Afia Charles in the 400m on Friday morning.

Fenton says he is very excited about the duo and his desire is just for them to be competitive.

“As long as the young ladies go out there and compete it is exciting for me, given the level and type of events, I can only ask for them to give it their best and as long as that is done I will be very pleased.”

As is relates to sprinters Daniel Bailey and Brendan Christian, the Chef de Mission says both of them are world class athletes and are no strangers to the big stage.

He says Christian, who arrived on Thursday after months of training with his coach in Texas, is in peak form and is just waiting for his turn in the 200m, which starts next week Tuesday.

However, he was quick to point out that Christian did not arrive to the camp late because it was agreed upon by the National Olympic Association and the athlete that it was in his best interest that he remained with his overseas based coach to prepare for the Games, thus the reason for him to arrive when he did.

Fenton adds that Bailey continues to train hard for his 100m on Saturday.

Meanwhile, team doctor Philmore Benjamin says that all the athletes are in good health and there has not been anything to raise any alarm or fear thus far.
