Tennis Association Cheers On Juniors

Shakir-ElvinAntigua St. John's - The national Olympic Committee (NOC)-sponsored Junior Tennis Team continues to move on in their fight for positions at the Junior International Tennis Championships (JITIC) in San Salvador.

The youngsters, playing in both singles and doubles matches, are aiming for both main draw and consolation draw positions, and the Antigua & Barbuda Tennis Association (ABTA) continues to encourage them.

Monday’s results brought mixed news. This tournament is played in a feed in system, therefore, though a competitor may lose a match he will continue to play until his final position is determined, the ABTA said.

The lone Under 16 competitor, Shakir Elvin, defeated Alberto De Mendiola of Costa Rico (CRC) in three sets 1-4, 5-3 (10-5); however, as Elvin is Team Antigua’s only U16 competitor, he is unable to play the doubles competition.

In the Under 14 competition, D'Jeri Raymond was outplayed by Mexican Alexa Coutino in straight sets (4-2, 4-0).

Jessica Isaac also fell short of winning her match against Tirza Color (SUR). Isaac took the first set 4-2, but soon lost the second set 1-4 and eventually lost in the deciding tie break set 4-10.

Raymond and Isaac continued their Under 14 doubles competition Tuesday after rain delayed play the day before. The team came up against the Curacao doubles team of Josephine Marshall and Danisja Ricardo.

Ricardo and Marshall took the tightly contested first set 7-5 but Raymond and Isaac made an easy win of the second set. However, the third, as fate would have it, went to Marshall and Ricardo 10-8.

The Raymond/Isaac team has now moved to the doubles consolation competition.

The Under 14 boys’ consolation competition saw Cordell Williams Jr come up against Joshua Worme of Barbados.  Worme overcame Williams Jr in straight sets 4-1, 4-2.

Also in the boys consolation competition Justice Christopher lost to Nagid Walle (CUR) 4-0, 4-0.

The boys’ doubles competition continued as well after rain delays. On Monday evening, the team of Justice Christopher and Williams Jr came up against Yigal Bergen/Joshio Loor (SUR), losing 6-1, 6-1.

The team was later moved to the consolation doubles where they met the team Gerardo Ramirez/Samuel Hall of Honduras. The match was taken by Ramirez/Hall in straight sets 6-0, 6-2.

ABTA continues to wish the very best for Team Antigua.
