On the red clay of the Maya Country Club on Saturday, Antigua & Barbuda’s lone Under-16 player Shakir Elvin won his first two rounds of round robin qualifiers in the Junior International Tennis Championships.
In his first match of the day, Elvin easily defeated Roberto Aviles of Honduras 4-0, 4-2; he then went on to defeat Jermaine le Grand of Aruba 4-1, 5-3.
However, the members of the Under-14 team soon learned what it takes to be counted in their hard court matches. Judging from the statistics, it was not the best of days for these young players but the experience they will gain in San Salvador will truly help with their development, a release from the Antigua & Barbuda Tennis Association said.
D'Jeri Raymond was ousted in her first match by Fatima Murphy of Honduras in three sets 5-3, 1-4 (10-6). Next on court was Jessica Isaac who came up against Gabriella Donaldson of Bahamas, losing 4-2, 4-2. Justice Christopher also lost to Alvaro Escobar of Guadeloupe 4-0, 4-0.
In the afternoon sessions, Isaac went down to Mexico’s Andrea Perez in straight sets of 4-0, 4-1; Cordell Williams Jr. lost to Sebastian Quiroz of Curacao, 4-1, 4-0; and Christopher in his second match went down to Cristian Zeron of Honduras, 4-0, 4-0.
In the final match of the day for Team Antigua, Williams Jr came up against Luis Anibal Marcano of Bonaire, but although he played brilliantly, Williams was defeated 4-0, 4-2.
This tournament continues until Saturday, August 4. The team is receiving much encouragement from Captain Erica Williams as they move on to the next round of competition expected to kick off 9 am on July 29.
