Athletes Leave for London Empty-Handed

R-L ABOA president Chet Greene and Chef de Mission, Neville FentonAntigua St. John’s - Antigua and Barbuda athletes and officials are on their way to London, England, to represent the country at the 2012 Summer Olympics empty-handed, as a request to the government for assistance fell on deaf-ears.

Both President of the Antigua and Barbuda Olympic Association (ABOA), Paul Chet Greene, and Chef de Mission, Neville Fenton, have confirmed their a letter requesting financial assistance amounting to $22,000 to provide the athletes and officials with per diem did not receive a positive response from the government.

Greene again raised the matter when he presented the Prime Minister, Baldwin Spencer, with a shirt that would be worn by the athletes and officials just prior to his departure to London on Saturday.

Fenton, who left on Sunday, said the entire delegation representing Antigua and Barbuda will be fully assembled by Tuesday. He said the International Olympic Committee provides airfare and accommodation for athletes and officials, but it is expected that national governments would assist with providing per diem for their athletes.

The Chef de Mission, a veteran of several Olympic and International sporting meets, said the lack of response from the government this year is nothing new.

“The Athletics Association is still owed money from the government for our participation in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India,” he disclosed.

He explained that requests to the government have been denied going back even to the International Meet in Brazil in 2007 where Brendan Christian, one of the athletes attending the London games, won the 200 metre race.

Despite their not assisting the team cover its expenses, Christian was the toast of the government officials who seemingly wanted to share in his success. He was invited back to Antigua and paraded on stage, according to information gleaned by Caribarena.com.

Fenton noted that despite the failure of the government to offer tangible support for the delegation, the team felt obligated to present a shirt and a commemorative pin to the head of government, the prime minister.

The Antigua and Barbuda delegation includes five athletes: Christian, whose specialty is the 200m; Daniel “Bakka” Bailey, 100m; Afia Charles, 200m (female); and swimmers, Karin Clashing-O’Reilly (female); and Orel Jeffrey (male). Other members of the delegation include, secretary of the ABOA, Cliff Williams and Dr Philmore Benjamin, team doctor.

The 2012 Olympic Games starts this weekend ant the team returns in late August.

who is the Minister for Sports. Well, he/she should be ashamed! None of them give a rats ass about the Olympics and the athletes that train for them. All they care about is themselves and they cronies. But watch out if an athlete does well, then they want to bask in the sunshine. I wish there was a THIRD POLITICAL PARTY TO VOTE FOR! no matter who it is me would vote fa dem!

These are our Ambassadors

#9 Oh Antigua!!!! » 2012-07-23 20:19

There is no excuse for the government in this one. The olympic committee is the only sports organization in this country that is doing anything to help our athletes. They could have easily paid the per diems to the Olympic delegation and not help all the other sports they have. They just paid the bills for Tennis to central america, our two young sprint athletes to Spain, Netball to the OECS and not so long ago for Golf, Cycling, Basketball and even schools sports.
The government after signing an MOU with them allegedly refuse to give them a lease for the Nurses hostel because of politics and yet Chet, like a fool continues to play from the heart in the name of country.
Give the damn athletes the money, they deserve it. you are not hurting Chet the IOC pays his bills

Listen ... the government already spent over 30 million to fence all the ball parks they can find in Antigua and now ya'll expect them to find more money for us to go and participate in the actual sports now?

On a serious note ... has anyone took a look at some of those fields lately? You can't even jog in some of them or you can break your leg or get lost in the bush!!!

#6 microwave chef » 2012-07-23 13:06

hello you are all ungrateful and rude :-) . millions of dollars have been spend on fencing in Antigua and as you all know fencing is an Olympic sport.
with all that money spend on fencing it is a shame we don't have Antigua represented in that discipline. but maybe one of the many officials that are going to the Olympics can give it a try they should be good at it by now.
as for our athletes thy have always been on there own and will only be know when it is beneficial to the politicians remember the Benna boy.

Both typical of the government. Why even send a team, when obviously the government wont invest in a proper training facility & won't financially support the efforts of these great young people. All Antiguan's are are proud of you. Go have fun & make us proud.
The PM should be ashamed of himself, this is what we have come to. Poor Antigua & Barbuda.
