Antigua St. John’s - The National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Antigua and Barbuda has announced the team that will be the face of the country for the 2012 Olympic Games.
Five athletes will represent the twin island nation in two disciplines – athletics and swimming – during the Summer Games which will be held from July 27 to August 12 in London, England.
Daniel Bailey, Brendan Christian, and Afia Charles will represent the country in the 100m, 200m and 400m races, respectively. Mr Calvin Greenaway was selected as the Team Manager by the Antigua and Barbuda Athletics Association.
In swimming, Karin Clashing will compete in the Female 50m Freestyle event, while Orel Jeffery will compete in the Male 50m Freestyle competition. Mrs Edith Clashing was selected by the Antigua and Barbuda Swimming Association as Team Manager.
Although no official decision has been made to date, Bailey will most likely be Antigua and Barbuda’s Flag Bearer during the July 27th London Opening Ceremony, a release from the NOC said.

Meanwhile, Mr Neville Fenton will head the delegation as Chef de Mission. He will be assisted by Mr Cordell Williams who will serve in the capacity of Administrative Assistant, and Dr Philmore Benjamin will serve as Team Doctor.
The Antigua contingent will also comprise NOC President, Senator E. P. Chet Greene and Secretary General, Cliff Williams both of whom accepted the usual special invitation to attend the Games as part of the Olympic Family.
In his capacity as Minister of Sports, Senator Winston Williams will attend as the International Olympic Committee recognises the Minister of Sports and the Head of Government as the two government representatives to attend the Games.
Senator Williams will be engaged in several meetings with his peers of the 204 Olympic Nations as well as the specially scheduled Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting to be held on 23rd July, 2012.
Apart from the team, Sports Reporter Joel Rayne will be representing the local media in London. Rayne will relay pertinent information regarding the participation of the Antiguan and other Caribbean athletes and provide the various media houses with daily updates on the activities of the contingent.
The team is scheduled to leave Antigua on the evening of Tuesday, July 24.

Yes the kids should go with their coaches. The politicians should stay home and tend to business. If they want to go see the games they should pay their own way!
