Antigua St. John’s - Over 100 cyclists from across the Caribbean will converge on Antigua & Barbuda from October 20 to 21, when the Antigua & Barbuda Cycling Association (ABCA) hosts the 12th Caribbean Cycling Championships.
President of ABCA and Treasurer of the Caribbean Cycling Federation (CCF) Cliff Williams said the championships will see the best in the sport from 27 countries competing in Antigua.
Antigua & Barbuda won the bid by beating out the closest rival, Curacao, by over 90 per cent at the 2011 CCF Congress held at the Holiday Inn in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
“The 12th Caribbean Cycling Championships will be an event that will unite the Caribbean as we are expecting some of the region’s top cyclists from Belize down to Suriname. The local association will ensure that the competition maintains its high calibre and provides a safe and exciting course for the riders to compete at their highest possible level,” Williams said in a release.
The Time Trials on Saturday 20th October will see riders competing in two laps. Starting at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Grounds, they will turn left onto Sir Sydney Walling Highway, past the Mount Joy Roundabout onto Jonas Road, before turning at the end of Jonas Road and heading back to Sir Sydney Walling Highway, North Sound, down to the Police Recreation Grounds, then turning back to the start/finish line at Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Grounds to complete a total of 24 miles.
The main race on Sunday 21st October will commence from the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Grounds at 9 am and take the following route: From the roads east of the Sir Vivian Richards Grounds, left onto Sir Sydney Walling Highway, past Mount Joy Roundabout, Pares Village, making the right into Collins, then Bethesda, Red Hill, Cobb’s Cross, Falmouth, Liberta, All Saints, Jonas Road, back onto Sir Sydney Walling Highway, North Sound, then making the right at North Sound Roundabout onto the roads surrounding Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Grounds to the start/finish for four laps totalling 84 miles.
Last year, the 11th Caribbean Cycling Championships was held in Jamaica. The defending 68 km Women’s Champion is Shalini Zabaneh of Belize with a time of 2:03:45. Cedric Eustache of Martinique is the defending Male Champion with a time of 2:48:50, while Tamiko Butler of Antigua & Barbuda is the defending Caribbean Female Time Trial Champion.
Countries expected to participate include Aruba, Antigua & Barbuda, Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Bermuda, Barbados, Belize, Cayman Islands, Dominica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, Guyana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, St. Lucia, USVI, St. Maarten, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Curacao and French Guiana.
The Organising committee for the 12th Caribbean Cycling Championships 2012 consists of Cliff Williams, Roland Morgan, Curtis Ryan, Franklyn Benjamin, Curtis Mckay, Sherifa Khan, Stenlie Matthew and Mervin Gore, assisted by Pyramid Events Management Company.
