Lake Heads New Golf Association

Lake Heads New Golf AssociationAntigua St John's - Everett Lake is now the new president of the Antigua & Barbuda Golf Association (ABGA) following an extraordinary meeting held at the Cedar Valley Golf Club on Thursday.

Following months of inactivity, the members of the ABGA convened the meeting to vote a new executive to carry the sport forward.

In a process observed by Director of Sports Mervyn Richards and Ann Jonas, head of planning in the Ministry of Sports, the membership called on Lake to lead and he accepted.

Lake and his new executive are aware of the challenges ahead and have already started to plan for the Antigua Open scheduled for next weekend.

“We have to go to work right away,” Lake said soon after he was named president.

“The Antigua Open is a very important event for a number of reasons mainly to give national players an opportunity to make the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) team.”

Last weekend a number of Antiguans journeyed to the Sugar City for the St. Kitts Open.

To make the OECS team, all players must play two of the three OECS sanctioned tournaments held in St. Kitts, St. Lucia and Antigua.

Both St. Kitts and St. Lucia have held their tournaments with the Antiguans playing only in the St. Kitts leg.

The Antiguans cannot qualify to play unless Antigua & Barbuda hold its competition. As president, Lake must ensure that Antigua & Barbuda tournament takes place.

“We must give our players that opportunity,” said an adamant Lake.

“We have to move right now and this is what we will be focusing on starting tonight.”

The newly appointed president added that he intends to ensure that the association is properly organized to serve the golfing population of Antigua & Barbuda.

“We must make sure that as an association we put systems in place so that the golfers, especially the youth, can play in well organized environment,” Lake stated.

“This new executive has the quality of persons to improve golf in Antigua & Barbuda and we will work hard to do so.”

The other executive members are Andy Hall as Vice President, Secretary Navin Singh, Thomas Anthony as Treasurer and Jane Seagul and Tom Hellier as ordinary members.

Pedro Corbin is a non-voting advisor whose expertise the association will be able to rely on when needed.

Next week, players from around the OECS will converge on Cedar Valley to battle local golfers including reigning national champion Mike Gordon.

As usual at Cedar Valley! No forward or critical thinking. Maybe one day in the future CVGC will let someone take the helm to move into the 21st century and has a total grasp of the golf and tourism business. Such a beautiful and friendly place. Loved our time in Antigua and will always think of what could have been.

No forward thinking, lack of planning, last minute preparation "...to give national plyerrs an opportunity..." total hogwash. The sport is not taken seriously, it's a sad state of affairs.
