Antigua St John's - Everett Lake is now the new president of the Antigua & Barbuda Golf Association (ABGA) following an extraordinary meeting held at the Cedar Valley Golf Club on Thursday.
Following months of inactivity, the members of the ABGA convened the meeting to vote a new executive to carry the sport forward.
In a process observed by Director of Sports Mervyn Richards and Ann Jonas, head of planning in the Ministry of Sports, the membership called on Lake to lead and he accepted.
Lake and his new executive are aware of the challenges ahead and have already started to plan for the Antigua Open scheduled for next weekend.
“We have to go to work right away,” Lake said soon after he was named president.
“The Antigua Open is a very important event for a number of reasons mainly to give national players an opportunity to make the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) team.”
Last weekend a number of Antiguans journeyed to the Sugar City for the St. Kitts Open.
To make the OECS team, all players must play two of the three OECS sanctioned tournaments held in St. Kitts, St. Lucia and Antigua.
Both St. Kitts and St. Lucia have held their tournaments with the Antiguans playing only in the St. Kitts leg.
The Antiguans cannot qualify to play unless Antigua & Barbuda hold its competition. As president, Lake must ensure that Antigua & Barbuda tournament takes place.
