Antigua St John's - Day one of the Under 14 round robin qualifiers proved to be great one for team Antigua. Jevannie Ambrose, the lone Antiguan Under 14 competitor in the Copa Sultana, won both of his opening matches.
In match one, Ambrose defeated Juan Lucca Casalduc (PUR) 5-4, 4-0. In match two, Ambrose defeated Guillermo Jimenez (PUR) 4-1, 4-1.
A release from the contingent said, "Though this tournament has proven to be properly organised by its directors, the steady decline of under-14 players is not only a problem in the English-speaking Caribbean, but has also shown its ugly head here at the Copa Sultana."
Organisers were forced to cancel the girls' under 14 competition. D'Jeri Raymond subsequently received a wild card into the under-18 girls' draw. Also receiving a wild card was Jody Maginley. Also playing in the under-18 boys' draw is Shakir Elvin.
Under 18 main draw matches (singles & doubles) will begin on Monday 9.
The association thanked ABI Bank, sponsor for D'Jeri Raymond, West Indies Oil Company - Christopher & Gonsalves Chambers, the family who came on board in support of Shakir Elvin, and family and friends who continue to support Cordell Williams Jr, Jevannie Ambrose, and Jody Maginley.
They also thanked Alice Williams, who is the on-tour support for the juniors.
