Footballers Awarded College Scholarships

ABFAAntigua St John's - National football players Devikka Tittle and Argell London, of Lady Hoppers, along with Heidi Samara Thomas of SAP, have received scholarships to Bryant & Stratton College, a proprietary college in Syracuse, New York, for the next two years to play football and earn a degree.

The national players will again have a chance to earn four-year scholarships once they work hard, as a number of the school's players are offered scholarships to play football at four-year colleges following their Bryant & Stratton graduation.

The players were able to attain the scholarships through the Greenbay Hoppers FC, which has a long-term relationship with College Director of Athletics Nick Dimitrievski, along with the assistance of the secretariat of the Antigua & Barbuda Football Association.

Gwen Salmon, who has the responsible of the ABFA Women’s Football Programme, said, “This is an initiative that has been taken by the ABFA  Women’s Football Committee. On a yearly basis, we will work hard to get our national players football scholarships to assist them in getting a higher education through a sport they love.

I am appealing to the other players to stay in school, work hard at their game, continue on the right path, and make sure they aim for success in all their endeavours."

The ABFA Women’s Committee stressed that it has the interest of the players at heart, and will work with each national player to achieve her goals.

The women’s football fraternity wished the young women every success with their studies, and appealed to the national players to give their best effort and make Antigua & Barbuda and their families proud.

Either i missed something or you are being incomplete Caribarena. Let's not forget national 3-peat champions 2009/2010/2011) and National team players Anik Jarvis (Midwestern State University) and Melia Green (South Carolina) on scholarships in the US. Wouldn't be surprised if i saw either of them in the WPL. Some recognition would be appreciated.

I agree, it is about who you vote for and who you are related too. It is all UPP right now until some other party enters power then it will be all them. When will we use merit and love? I know, never, until

Is it certain persons being looked at

#3 Bluddy Bloke » 2011-09-14 16:08

It is great to hear that our young ladies are going abroad via scholarships to persue their dreams. However, we have young talented men in A & B, who have represented our country in football, graduated from the state College, unemployed, certified in aviation and yet still can't be seen to be offered a scholarship. Is it that certain persons are looked at? Such culture can breed frustration and send these youngsters on the streets. Lets remember, the young men can be more harmful to our society if their idle hands do not find anything to do.
