ABFA Woes

Everton Antigua St. John's - Even as Everton "Batow" Gonsalves continues to categorically deny any wrongdoing, football world governing body the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA), on Tuesday, announced the appointment of retired Caribbean Supreme Court Chief Justice, Sir Brian Alleyne as Chairman of the electoral committee.

He is charged with overseeing free and clear elections in the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association (ABFA) executive electoral committee, to be held no later than 15th April, 2013.

FIFA, in a March 5th letter, criticised the conduct of the ABFA elections held on December 20th, 2012, citing irregularities and what the world body has described as "intentional" withholding of information contained in a FIFA letter to the ABFA and "misinformation" to the membership of the ABFA by Gonsalves and Gordon "Banks" Derrick.

Last year's election ended in acrimony after Derrick and Gonsalves, according to FIFA, adopted "extensive and questionable interpretation of the association's constitution" which barred lone challenger Veron "Epilus" Edwards from contesting the presidency, while allowing "the incumbent members of the executive to run for election almost unopposed".

Worldwide, FIFA is attempting to clean up the spectre of corruption in the sport, and the ABFA is under their microscope. On Tuesday morning, and in response to allegations of impropriety, Gonsalves took to the airwaves in an attempt to clear his  position. But even as he spoke, armed with a cadre of documentation, Senator Paul Chet Green who is a functioning commissioner of FIFA countered all of his claims and justifications with documentation of his own.

Gonsalves did confirm that his position has indeed been shrouded in accusations of questionable interpretation of the statutes, and was further put to task by Greene as to a series of correspondence sent to FIFA by Gonsalves and dated November, 2012.

At the end of the tirade, questions are still swirling and these questions will either be answered, or put to rest at the conclusion of the elections in April.

Do these people really think Antiguans and FIFA are so stupid?? All THREE of these no good players, Greene, Gonslaves and Derrick all need to step down so that ABFA can start with a clean untarnished slate!
Just google Chet Greene at the link below and see what the rest of the world sees!

Can anyone confirm the news I heard tonight that Gonsalves has resigned? If true, it is the most welcomed news I've heard for the week. When will Banks follow suite?
Happy riddance.

There is an insatiable hunger for power and authority in Antigua, be it in Politics, football....jus t a fleshy need to be in authority, to be important. Just to be at the helm seems to be all important and secondary to nothing. I pray there will be a change one day.

As i listened to Mr. Gonsalves yesterday, via ZDK, his conduct can be easily labelled obfuscation. Instead of dealing with the issues, he instead preferred to focus on the messenger. His purpose was to attempt to ensure that certain persons dislike for the messenger, would help them to ignore the message. The very act of doing this shows, that he has no respect for the people he serves. This is further evidenced by the story he told members of what FIFA had said, when correspondence shows differently. He then tried to hide the letter. The episode bring back memories of how MP Lovell (the L one) dealt with the report into the fencing scandal. It was kept under raps for over a year, while Lovell provided us with his own flawed interpretation of its content

ABFA was on the FIFA's radar but both President and General-Secreta ry continues to play the role of 'partners-in-cx ixe.' At the end of the day, the ABFA must be rid of 'corruption' if it needs to survive. Enough said!

Do we have no principles or shame?

#1 Real Observer » 2013-03-13 07:38

It is clear that FIFA has lost confidence in the leadership of Gonsalves and Derrick and the honourable thing for them to do now is tender their resignations and not plunge the association and sport into further scandals.
From reading the FIFA letter reprinted here on caribarena last week and following the discussions on radio, it is clear that Banks and Batow have caused FIFA great embar**ment to the extent that they are now damaged, contaminated goods to be dumped. The clubs should ask them to reign or be forced into oblivion by way of a motion to expel them from the association.
People have a right to hold on to office but certainly not when the evidence of irruption is so impelling and proven beyond doubt
