Antigua Draw Against Jamaica

Antigua Draw Against JamaicaAntigua St John's - The Benna Boyz came away with a point against the Jamaica Reggae Boyz following a 0-0 draw in a game they should have won, but in which both teams failed to score.

The Jamaicans also had chances to score but did not capitalize; twice they hit the woodwork but could not get past the Antiguan keeper.

Numerous opportunities went a begging, at least three on the legs of striker Peter “Big Pete” Byers, who shot wide and high on multiple tries.

Tamarley “Ziggy” Thomas’ pass to Randolph “Etty” Burton, alone with the keeper, should have been converted but Burton did not even get a touch.

Coach Tom Curtis, though disappointed that the Benna Boyz did not win, was pleased that his team did not give up a goal.

“We had a lot of chances but with the quality of the Jamaica team some 50 notches above us I think that the guys played well to hold them to a draw,” the Antiguan coach said.

“The guys continue to show a level of maturity and discipline that is necessary for this level.

“We played against a good team and held them to a draw and that should be commended.”

From start to finish the home team looked more aggressive than the visitors.

“In the last 20 minutes we had good chances to score,” the coach said.

The home crowd came out in their numbers

The Jamaicans, who came into the game already with a win over Guatemala last week, may be pleased to have left Antigua & Barbuda with at least a point.

The giants of CONCACAF football Jamaica really did not look the more dominant team, and the three points that they might have expected did not come.

The home crowd came out in their numbers and the Benna Boyz gave it their best, coming out of the blocks with fire.

Peter Byers got two great chances and should have scored but was unable to convert.

Goal keeper Molvin James, the best player for Antigua against the United States in the 1-3 loss, was just as fantastic in the first half as well.

One save in particular stood out: a header at the near post from the Reggae Boyz striker - and James was equal to the task denying the Jamaican.

Guatemala will have to take a point or beat the United States, or Antigua & Barbuda will occupy third place in the four-team competition.

After the performance against the United States then the draw against the Jamaicans, the Benna Boyz must be feeling pretty good about their chances of getting to RIO for 2014.

Despite the Benna Boys drawing with the Jamaicans (the strongest side in their group), all is not lost having just heard that the 'mighty' USA dropped points against Guatemala after their 1-1 draw last night.

Win your next 2 home games Antigua, and pick up the odd point or two on your travels and you never know ... 8)

ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA BE PROUD

#18 THE GODFATHER » 2012-06-13 15:28

Remember in 1989 Antigua and Barbuda beat Jamaica 1-0, imagine the headlines then, the Jamaica Observer article on June 12th 2012 is no different. This article reeks of similar insular emphasis, Antigua and Barbuda 'clearly the weakest on paper' How did the author assume that, 'tiny' we maybe but not 'weak'

We must be clear, Antigua and Barbuda is no countries subordinate, and that's a proven fact, so the authors feeble attempt to undermine our teams valiant effort and strength demonstrates the crux of CARCICOM problem. During the glorious days of West Indies cricket, did we not conquer all?

The author should know we all celebrated when Jamaica made it to the World Cup, and we deplore any nation thinking of us in any insular manner, because if this template is used by the U.S or Guatamela you woildnswiftly condemn it. Antigua and Barbuda be proud!

The boys did well there is no doubt but there is still a lot of work to do. More teamwork is needed, I saw a couple of players whi should have played the ball on when they had the chance but instead chose to try and play through the jamaican defence, very commendable but don't try and be a hero, play the ball on, there was more chance of getting a goal. Pete Byers should have had two goals, but lost his nerve when the time came. More teamwork, more ball skills needed. We're not quite good enough yet, but one step at a time.

Congratulations Benna Boys

#14 Wow » 2012-06-13 11:15

Congratulations to the Benna Boys. I thoroughly enjoyed the performance last night and I am glad we held off the "great" Reggae Boys. I am slightly ho** now but it was worth it.
A small note to the organisers for last night. Please get rid of the stadium announcer. She sounded awful to say the least and the safety announcements she was making was too loud and most threatening. A calmer more cheery voice would have been better.

We Behind you all the WAY TO RIO BENNA BOYZ

#11 Pied Piper » 2012-06-13 10:56

Benna Boyz, the cards are stacked against you but as usual for the past 2 games you showed you have the fight to win as the underdogs you are labelled. Now, you have proven to us you can and we beleave in you. A small nation with a little axe, a little sling, a dot in the Atlantic, show the world that this dot is going to a pain for the giants of football.

Its our time Benna Boyz, don't be discouraged by those that ramble, we are with you ALL THE WAY!!

WE WILL WIN

#9 THE GODFATHER » 2012-06-13 09:00

There were many fast and furious criticism against the Benna Boyz, many were not warranted. Many assume that Jamaica would have defeated Antigua and Barbuda, I read in the Jamaica one such comment 'Antigua will be defeated 3-1' but that did not happen. Also, the many Jamaicans in Antigua who I spoke to shared similar humiliation sentiments! Never happened.

The game is all about skill, power, strength and game plan, its man against man, not the bigness of any against the smallness of many. We have demonstrated that we have the will power, and possess the attributes of
success. In my mind Antigua and Barbuda is moving with gradual pace, don't worry, keep the faith Antigua and Babuda time is near. We will win!

Jamaica Observer Newspaper Insults Our Team

#8 Vicnes » 2012-06-13 08:40

This is what the Jamaicans said about us on the front page of ther Observer:

"Scrappy Boyz! Minnows hold Ja 0-0 in W'Cup qualifier"

"ST JOHN'S, Antigua — In a lack lustre performance, Jamaica could only eke out a point in a 0-0 stalemate against a spirited, if not talented Antigua and Barbuda aggregation here at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Grounds last night."

This is insulting to our team, to say the least. Now we must beat the overrated Jamaicans in the rematch, and show them just how much talent we lack.

Don't know these players that well but Molvin James is world class. Number 11 is extremely business like. You can see the guy thinks football. Number 13, if he is good did not demonstrate that last night and needed to exit a bit sooner as he was very ordinary in his performance. Could be a bad night. When on the attack the striker needs a bit more support from the middle. Too much air ball, better ball development and control needed. All in all the team has made us proud. Just some constructive criticism.

#5 Vicnes » 2012-06-13 06:16

Congratulation to the team. Now there are four (4) more games left, and despite our success, this is no time to rest on our laurels. Winning the remaining games is our only option.

TAP ADVANTAGE ARAB SKEPPLE

#4 Bluddy Bloke » 2012-06-13 05:43

The Benna Boyz can be a force to reckon with. However, internal politics must be erased from the team. The head coach seem to be a bit bias towards the English base players and Ziggy. Ofcourse they are an asset to the side. Last evening, it is not clear as to why #3 had to be brought onto the field in front of Arab Skepple who is one of our better strikers and Ziggy be left on the field when NERVES seem to be taking the best of him. #10 has not proven his worth yet. Tom Curtis & Fernando Abraham is accountable to the Antiguan people. They need to tell us as to why Arab skepple cannot make his debut as yet. IT IS PURE ADVANTAGE!!!!!! !

Good for the team. The way Molvin James is performing is opening doors for him in the pro arena. The Unites States is one of the main breeding grounds for goal keepers around the world so there are many open doors in the MLS. Note that MLS scouts watched Molvin Vs the USA.
