Antigua St John's - Two days after losing to the Antigua Barracudas in the United Soccer League, the Charlotte Eagles revenged that loss with a 2-0 victory at the home of the 'Cudas at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Saturday.
An own goal in the sixth minute put the 'Cudas on the defensive, and the Eagles took full advantage with intense pressure from that time to the end.
The 'Cudas had chances - the best a penalty in the 65th minute after Daryl Roberts had doubled the Eagles’ advantage eight minutes earlier.
That second strike was similar to the first, a defensive blunder, and the Eagles capitalized.
Keeper Molvin James got mixed up with his defenders on a feeble shot from Roberts, and the ball deflected and trickled into the back of the net.
The 'Cudas pushed for a goal and got the penalty on a corner kick from the right side, which was handled in the area.
Stephan “Tommy” Smith, who scored twice on Thursday ,shot high right over the crossbar and the Eagles' keeper, Eric Reid, had no work to do.
It was a tough night for 'Cudas defender Luke Blakeley, who had a hand (foot) in both goals for the Eagles - first the own goal then the second, which deflected off his boot past James.
The Eagles picked up their first win of the season, despite playing some very exciting and attacking football.
“They are a much better team than their record suggests,” 'Cudas coach Tom Curtis said after the home team’s win on Thursday.
Saturday’s result was not a surprise, as the Eagles came mighty close to at least a draw on Thursday after the 'Cudas wasted numerous opportunities to score.
The Eagles also blew a number of chances.
Both will be on the road next week, with the 'Cudas travelling to take on the Hammerheads of Wilmington, while the Eagles go to New York to take on the Rochester Rhinos.
