Five P’s and Hoppers are Champs

Five P’s and Hoppers are ChampsAntigua St John's - Defending regular season champions Five P’s beat Lady Sap 3-1 to win the female 2012 senior championship, while Lady Hoppers hammered Wings 6-0 to claim the junior title.

In the feature game of the double header at Rangers football field, Five P’s wasted no time to make its intentions known with a goal in the first minute.

Kai Jacobs had the champions on the way to the title before Lady Sap settled in from their ride from Bolans village.

Six minutes later, Jacobs doubled the lead with a well-placed right-footed shot into the left bottom corner of the net past the Sap keeper.

It looked like Five P’s was on the way to a handful, but Sap reorganized and held firm, and at the same time made a number of runs on the Five P’s keeper.

Most Valuable Player of the tournament defender Britney Jacobs stood like “Stone Wall Jackson” in the back to deny Akeila “Granny” Hillhouse and the Sap strikers until the game was out of reach.

Kamika Buckley gave Five P’s a three-goal cushion in the 25th minute as the champions took a 3-0 lead into the break.

Five P’s and Hoppers are Champs

Michell Marshall pulled a goal back in the 52nd, but on Thursday, it was Five P’s night and they added the knockout trophy to a regular season title a year ago.

Coach Tajroy Richards sent a warning for the rest of the teams getting set for the regular season, which starts on Sunday.

“The way we prepared, I knew that we were going to win,” Richards said. “We intend to take this win into the regular season and successfully defend our title."

The coach said he was so proud of the women, who did all that was asked of them during practice as well as during the games.
“They come to practice and they follow instructions, so I knew that we would do well and I’m so proud of them,” he said.

Earlier, Kimesha Martin was on fire as she led Hoppers to the title with four goals to claim the Most Valuable Player trophy in the one-sided affair.

Cadeejah Proctor and Zetise Greene added a goal each for the Green Bay team that took the championship, a novelty that the premier division male team is yet to claim.

Antigua Labour Party candidate for St Mary's South Samantha Marshall handed out the trophy to Five P's, while the president of the Antigua & Barbuda Football Association presented the Hoppers team with their hardware.
