Support Building for Benna Boys

Support Building for Benna BoysAntigua St John's - Signs that the village is coming together to support Antigua & Barbuda’s Benna Boys in their 2014 FIFA World Cup bid were evident Tuesday night at the launch of the campaign.

Leader of the Nation of Islam Louis Farrakhan, who is on island as part of a Caribbean tour, as the special guest of the prime minister, said he would donate US$5,000 to the cause.

Member of Parliament for St Peter Asot Michael, an ardent football supporter, said he would use whatever “persuasive powers” he has to raise much-needed funds. On Tuesday, his commitment was already clear by the fact that he had picked up the tab to outfit the team and management in Oxford shirts sporting the newly-minted ABFA logo and khakis.

Music maestro Oungku told those gathered under the night sky at Sugar Ridge Resort that his contribution to the cause was Benna Mental, the infectious theme song. “I’m rich in music,” the Red Hott bandleader said, “and that’s my donation to the national effort.”

Intangibles came, meanwhile, in several ways, including an extended radio advertisement featuring parliamentarians from both sides of the aisle, in a mock session presided over by Speaker of the House D Gisele Isaac.

All endorsed the World Cup campaign and the Antigua & Barbuda Football Association, with Madam Speaker taking a vote to indicate support at the end, and saying, “I know the ayes have it.”

Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer meanwhile said the government is committed to supporting the ABFA in the campaign, and sought to rally all citizens and residents to do likewise.

“We are on board and we will work fully and closely to the Antigua & Barbuda Football Association,” the PM'S said.

He acknowledged the harsh economic climate and the constraints on the public purse, but said while “no final figure” had been decided, the government would work closely with the ABFA to find “creative ways” to fund the campaign.

The ABFA has projected that it will take approximately $9 M to get through the second round of the semifinals of the qualifiers. This is the farthest Antigua & Barbuda has ever reached since it began contesting for a spot at football’s ultimate championship in 1974.

ABFA General Secretary Gordon “Banks” Derrick said most of the money would cover travel, accommodation, ground transportation, and nutrition. Provisions for Antigua Barracuda FC, the professional outfit seen as indivisible from the national football team, have also been factored into the equation.

The Barracudas play in the United Soccer League. Their season opens on Friday, April 6 with a home game against Pittsburgh Riverhounds.

The Benna Boys will spring into World Cup Qualifiers action on June 8 against the United States in Tampa, Florida.

Notes From A Native Son Of the Rock. Did all of the stakeholders actively pursue one of the greatest opportunities for Branding the Team and in essence Antigua & Barbuda? T&T is associated with Socca and JA with Reggae. Many years ago while in that troubled Nation of MAli's Capital Bamako, I enjoyed a well spent night at a Club where the Malian band played only Reggae. Found a Reggae spot in SA during FIFA 2010. Hon Mr. Min of Tourism, where were you on the Naming of the Team? Quote:
If you are looking for examples of strong branding, the sports industry is the place to look. Teams rely on having strong brand indentity to engage their fans and give them the opportunity to feel involved in their team, and ultimately support them financially. This is achieved through team colour, a strong logo and a team identity to which fans are able to relate.
T&T & JA were able to do that nationally and internationally . The "Benna" Brand is powerful nationally with young and old. Will it have the pull internationally especially to provide the Strategic Brand Recognition to A&B's Tourism? Be The Judge. Heaven Help the "Benna Boys" and The Nation Of Antigua & Barbuda.

"Benna Boys" - "FalaH Fashan" or Branding? PT4

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. Who Sings Benna? There is The Calypso Tent! There is the Socca Monarch! "Consequence is no Coincidence". Many of the youthful techies have identified and clearly articulated an African Proverb that Quote:
“The state of one’s soul is more important than outward appearance.”
T&T has the Socca Boys. JA has the Reggae Boyz. A&B has the Benna Boys. Did the youthful techies rather than use their historical, social and musical past fall prey to the urban lingo of the text format of language? You be the Judge. Was this a case of following the larger Caribbean SIDS? You be The Judge. Some have said that it was the "Singing Meeting" groups of the Caribbean SIDS. Not Convinced. They even point to the fact that there may even be a Singing Meeting clash between the A&B "Benna Boys" and the JA "Reggae Boyz". Many who chafe at the word Boys/Boyz suggest taking a look at the African Soccer Nations who have the most interesting team nicknames denoting animals, strength, power, soaring to heights hitherto not reached and wisdom of the ancient Pharaohs. As has been stated, "wi caribbean."

"Benna Boys" - "FalaH Fashan" or Branding? PT3

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. The name "Benna Boys" while it’s now official, has, in fact, been in use for some time. Here is Gordon Derrick, Gen. Sec. of the ABFA Quote:
“We’ll just chalk it up to irony that the name chosen by the majority is the nickname by which the team is already known, and that, of course, speaks to music that is indigenous to us,”
Quarkoo and the Ancestors are rolling in their graves or smilling down on their descendants at the Dramatic Irony expressed by Derrick. Quote:
Benna (alternatively spelled bennah, or called ditti) is a genre of Antiguan and Barbudan music. It is a calypso-like genre, characterized by scandalous gossip and a call-and-response format. It first appeared after the prohibition of slavery, and became a form of folk communication in the early 20th century, and it spread local news across the islands
Some have stated that just like the A&B cadence, speech pattern or creole/kwreyol/ pattois/lingua this genre of music is also peculiar to Jamaica. "Fats & Dr. Ramsey" are better equipped to expound on this. Kincaid even suggests Benna's sexually seductive power, mystique and forbidden qualities.

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. National Text Voting Decided the Name from among Beach Boys or Iron Bandits. Did the 10 to 45 age group electronically sing their way to victory. The People Of The Book teach Quote:
that a name is not merely an arbitrary designation, a random combination of sounds. The name conveys the nature and essence of the thing named. It represents the history and reputation of the being named. This is not as strange or unfamiliar a concept as it may seem at first glance. We often refer to a person's reputation as his "good name." When a company is sold, one thing that may be sold is the company's "good will," that is, the right to use the company's name. An example of this occurs in Ex. 3:13-22: Moses asks God what His "name" is. Moses is not asking "what should I call you;" rather, he is asking "who are you; what are you like; what have you done." ... God replies that He is eternal, that He is the God of our ancestors, that He has seen our affliction and will redeem us from bondage. Because a name represents the reputation of the thing named, a name should be treated with the same respect as the thing's reputation.

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. Friends, CountryWomen/Me n, Ouadadlians, Rastas, do you honestly understand the significance and rationale for the Name of The National Football Team as they set out to enhant the World with their dazzling skills, enter and soothingly chant into the hearts and minds of old & young and musically make their SIDS proud on the stage of the world's greatest sporting event in the land of Salvador, Bahia, The largest Population of Africans outside of Africa, the Drum & Samba? Techies imprinted "Benna Boys" on this band of Youngsters, steeped in African rhythms and the song-dance brought to the plantations, which gave relief and solace to those who toiled in the fields.
Quote:
Music maestro Oungku ... under the night sky at Sugar Ridge Resort (and the North Atlantic and African Triangular Business Connection may have unknowingly come full circle in saying) that his contribution to the cause was Benna Mental, the infectious theme song. “I’m rich in music,” ... “and that’s my donation to the national effort.”
Some have stated that "Benna" provided the faceless men and women with a voice and means of expressions.
