Antigua St John's - “It was great and I can’t wait for the next one." That was the general consensus of the youngsters, parents, and coaches who participated in the Inet Kenny Benjamin Youth Festival last weekend at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Grounds.
Over 100 youngsters took part on an action-packed weekend that saw them participating in interactive workshops in nutrition, drama, public speaking, finance, and internet safety.
They also received fitness tips from the West Indies senior team fitness instructor, Hector Charles, and had special Master Class sessions with former West Indies great Curtly Ambrose and teammate Kenny Benjamin.
By the time the five team played a series of round robin matches, it was clear that the winner was "enthusiasm,” as boys and girls played their hearts out in 10/10 matches, as well as impromptu matches spread out across field under the watchful eye of the West Indies women’s team.
Their presence was an added bonus, and encouraged the girls to really get involved in cricket. Benjamin said,
“Although the women were in serious training sessions, they did take the time to comment that this is a really good event and we know that our girls got a real boost knowing that they too can make a career out of cricket."
He added that thanks to the energy of the facilitators Marcella Andre, Gavin Henry, Janice Benjamin, and Linisa George - the bar was raised to another level.
