Nation Lauded After Cricket Visit

Sir-Viv-and-Jimmy-AdamsAntigua St John's - The members of the Kent Cricket Club are singing the praises of the sports tourism team that co-ordinated and executed the details of their training camp in Antigua for the past week.

Head Coach and Former West Indies Team Captain Jimmy Adams said both the controllable and uncontrollable aspects of their stint were ultimately favourable, suiting the purpose for which they came.

The focus of the tour was to prepare the younger members of the team, whilst fine-tuning the first team members to ensure a flying start to the English cricket season.

“First of all the uncontrollable… the weather has been fantastic and the controllables have been of a very high standard," he said. "The facility here at the Sir Viv Richards Stadium has been excellent, the crew on the ground has been very supportive."

Adams gave special commendations to the head groundsman, Tony Merrick, whom he had been in contact with prior to his team’s arrival in Antigua. Merrick, he reported, “delivered everything he said he would by turning out a very good practice wicket!”

The management and staff of the Grand Pineapple Resort also received high regards. Coach Adams said the team delighted in their accommodations and in the service they were given, which was second to none.

A release from the government noted that these reports auger well for the prospects of sports tourism in Antigua. National hero and cricket legend, Antiguan-born Sir Viv Richards, who headed the marketing team to London, England selling Antigua as a sports tourism destination in latter 2011, said he was happy to hear reviews of the Kent Cricket Club. He said it is an effort worth building on.

“What I think now, what we would’ve gotten from here, we have to build on to ensure continued success and take the initiative out into the communities as well so that the teams that visit here receive a good overall perspective of what we have to offer,” said Sir Viv.

The prestigious Kent County Club, based in London, England, arrived in Antigua on March 7 and returned home on March 16.

The country is set to host two other cricket clubs from England in July and November 2012 - the Joseph Williams College and the Warwickshire Over-Fifties Club.
