For some people, the thought of driving with children makes them want to commit themselves to the lunatic asylum. I recently saw one woman on the verge of pulling the last strand of her hair out, constantly turning around to shout to the young passengers in the backseat of her car.
Some non-parents have even gone as far as to suggest "knocking" the children out before embarking on any sort of vehicular journey.
But I am happy to tell you that there is hope. There are things you can do to make driving with children more manageable and enjoyable, even when they constantly ask "Are we there yet?” while engaging in mud-wrestling and who-can-scream-the-loudest games.
Here are a few things you can do to make driving with children less painful:
1. The first consideration should be safety and comfort. All children under 12 should sit in the back seat, and infants must be properly restrained in age appropriate car-seats. Bring along a couple of cushions, pillows or blanket to make them even more comfortable. Make sure they understand the importance of buckling up and not distracting the driver.
2. Occupy them – keep them busy with a book, favourite doll or toy, DVD, video games, laptop or computer games they like or an Ipod or other personalized entertainment that they would like (use headphones).
3. Feed them – bring along snacks they like, along with juice and water, especially on long trips.
4. Rest-stops – Make sure everyone goes to the bathroom before leaving home. If the drive is long, remember to make rest-stops so that the kids do not scream and beg to go to the bathroom in the middle of heavy traffic.
5. Child-safety locks – use them!
