Pastor Gives Up Building

Queen-leandro-D.Issac-and-Rev-Browne1Pastor Charlesworth Browne said the first time any real use was made of the building that became the centre of a dispute between himself and education officials was last Sunday.

“We can’t be using the building, because it was not usable,” he told Caribarena.com after a story published the day before about the police turning up at the building.

He said they were only able to occupy the building on Sunday after extensive cleaning the day before.

“The Mother’s Day service was the first official function that was held there. Everything else that was going on there was relative to preparatory work. We never used the building for anything else,” he said.

“So most of the cleaning on Saturday was to put the building in a state of readiness… and they are making it look like we forcibly occupied the property without getting any permission,” Pastor Browne added.

This has been the contention of Minister of Education Dr Jacqui Quinn-Leandro and Executive Secretary of the Board of Education D Giselle Isaac.

While Pastor Browne may have received permission to occupy the building (constructed by Chinese construction company Complant), from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Education owns the building.

Dr Quinn-Leandro said Pastor Browne was contacted about the government’s need for the building.

Pastor Browne, meantime, said he personally was in no way put out, but noted that the building would have been used for community and charity work for around six months, as indicated in a letter.

“I don’t have a need for a place to go and look work to do," he said. "I am trying to help people. If you see my office at Clarke’s Hill, this office is better than the one Jacqui Quinn Leandro has."

He said after the intended six-month period of using the building, whatever work would have been completed would benefit the owners.

“The work we would have done as a caretaker organization of the building we would give it to you gratis,” he said.

Look how you people use this story to stage your political affiliation. How about all those who are supporting Pastor Browne's behavior taking a turn in occupying the building in question. I'm sure you would not take issue with someone occupying your properties after you warned them repeatedly.

For once, cant you people really be honest& fair and leave Pastor Browne out of this, never in the history of Any civilized nation, that a member of Govt send Police officers to a church, with the intent to stop worship, Jesus got angry and threw the gamblers out of the temple, Rev Browne is human, anyone would be annoyed especially when Jackie Quinn is trying to be such a barefaced liar and trying to be innocent,it is strange that when other so called religious men attack members of the ALP for statements they think should not be made,no one think they should stay out of politics, i hope that you people realize that God is not mocked, he also sees everything that goes on in peoples mind,so when persons pretend to be holy,it is not God that they fool, its themselves,The UPP is so desperate for power that they are even willing to attack the work of God, this is the last straw, they are heading down the wrong wrong road with this one, and can never win this battle,Machiave lli is really at work here.

Technically Speaking!

#20 Tony Anthony » 2010-05-12 12:06

Ref. 1187048362 - 13m

Jacqui is one of the three squatters in office, so technically speaking, she doesn't exactly have an office, so the pastor is correct about his office being better than hers.

P.S. I don't know what my reference # relates to yet, but I'm sure in time we will all find a good use for it!

Another victory for the UPP. They really find time out of their busy schedules for this one. We should have a parade for Jacqui and Jezel for bringing the pride back in Wadadli. Great job!! Great job. Would never have thought about doing something so intellectually and physically challenging. The greatness that these women have achieved in picking a priest out of a building will be right up there with George Bush going in Irag. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!

How could something so simple be made into a national issue? Sorry but time for us to see past the colour codings. There more issues for us to worry about such as the financial position of the BOE which needs to be properly investigated but yet we are throwing stones at other people who are not even in a position to impact upon the current situation. Tell us about the awarding of contracts to government ministers to construct buildings and no proper documentation was done to ascertain if the scope of work was valued correctly and the fact it was not awarded the opportunity of the tendering process. Do we hear any noise about situations like this? But we find time to pick on people who can't change the direction of the country. When well we hear from both parties about the library? What about the failing school system? I wonder if this building had a significant impact on what is happening today.

Pastor. False Prophet or Politician??

#15 Concerned ANU » 2010-05-12 03:50

Pastor Browne is the problem here. If he is unable to get permision from the minister and being told several times not to use the building the proper thing to do is to summon a meeting with the PS and the minister especially when he realizes that the the PS is giving him the authorization. This is the third that article I am reading about this Pastor Browne and he is definitely playing politics. He must realized he is just a citizen like any other Antiguan. Now he is also displaying his arrogance.

Pastor Brown

#14 Peace » 2010-05-12 03:49

Sure he's a Pastor but our Pastors are human and sometimes when they are hurt they simply react on impulse. I'm sure like others, Pastor Browne had regrets after his response to reporters. So, let's not judge him too harshly on his response.

The bottom line is they were harsh and unfair but as a man of God, he should not have gotten tangled in the political web. Politics is a dirty game, yes game, that's what it is. Pastor Browne, you should have left he rest up to God instead of responding. He never fails us.

re: King - Ministry of Education is the loser

#12 fnpsr » 2010-05-12 03:45

King, I am glad to see that there is a watch group monitoring the use of this building. It seems to me that the Ministry of Education is the loser in this melee. According to the pastor the building was in disrepair. He spent almost a day cleaning up the building to make it presentable for Sunday's services. The pastor also said that he would have repaired whatever needed repairing and that after six months he would have given up the building and the work that was done would have been gratis to the Ministry. In a civilized society, the parties would have sat at the table and discussed the use of the building. But this is impossible because of the political climate that permeates Antigua. Someone should request the strategic plans that would show the intent to use this building, which should include an analysis of the work that was required to make the building habitable; a call for bids; the accepted contractor; the cost to repair the building; the source of the funding; the project manger; a requisition for a work order and the projected time to repair the building. Without such a plan, the reason given by the Ministry is a farce.

#11 THE KING » 2010-05-12 03:37

Just wondering do you really understand the issue at hand? First of all the man didn't just go into the building like that without asking anyone about it and at the end of the day he walked away and left it. Now is thist he first time that people have sought the use of bulings in this country from the government. A clear example of builing use is the one on All Saints Road that house the Power Shift Ministry that was not abadonded at the time. In fact it was being used for a good cause at the time and at the end of the day they had the leave it so the young aspiring pan players had to seek other abode. Aslk yourself how long has the building in question not being ulitized by anyone? So then couldn't there be a situation of even sharing the building for a period of time negotiated and was don in Pigotts by the minister who allows a church to worship in her politically decorated consituency branch office?

Pastor Browne should have kept his mouth shut.....who wants to be a member of such an arrogant person? If your office is so much nicer, why did't they meet there and not have to "clean" goverment's building? As for "the king"....I guess any one who sees and empty building and wants to set up shop should do it.......that is why we have so many rouges in Antigua....beca use of the thinking of individuals like you.....we must be big men/women to know when we are in the wrong to be gracious and admit it.....Ms. Isaac and Quinn-Leandor is doing the work of the people of Antigua and Barbuda!!!! Please leave politics out and be and Antiguan/Barbud an for once.

#5 THE KING » 2010-05-12 01:26

Okay the building is now in the hands of the Ministry of Education and what next will you do with the building? Is this more important at this point than the completion of the Public Library? Makes one wonder the real motive behind the move to get the church out of the building in such a rush. Unless there is an immediate use of the facility then I will say this one was done to score poltical points and waste of times and resources in such a trivial matter. I do hope that when the time comes for you both to leave your offices that we will not have to call the said police to remove you both. We have more critical issues to deal with at this point such as reasons for the failing state of our school system which you both preside over. Sorry but you both have not done anything to enhance the system but to project yourselves in the spotlight. We as a public will be waiting to how and when you utilize the building as you claim was so urgently needed by the ministry. There will be a watch group that will be on the lookout.

This seems like your tithers did foot the bill on it. Ever wonder why there are folks that refuse to tithe?

pastor gives up building??

#1 confused » 2010-05-11 23:42

so has he or hasn't he "given up' the building as the headline says? nothing in the story points to whether the man has nor not...

and as for his "I don’t have a need for a place to go and look work to do. I am trying to help people. If you see my office at Clarke’s Hill, this office is better than the one Jacqui Quinn Leandro has"...the pastor clearly believes he's not only doing whoever owns the building a favour, but he's showing some arrogance here.
