Turning Judgement Day Into A Living History

Turning D Day Into A Living History

The most significant single syllable to emerge from this collective theatre of impatience, after the Eastern Caribbean Court of Appeal delivers its studied findings on Wednesday, is the opportunity for Antiguans and Barbudans, to express to the fullest, their struggle to convert lingering questions into nation-building endeavors.

It is expected that political players exercise prudence and maturity in the interest of national interest.  Should the ruling evoke parliamentary proceedings and the nation returns to the polls to determine leadership certainty or should the judiciary rule otherwise, it is further expected, that the relationship encompassing the rights of the people and the justice of the land will remain sacrosanct.  There is no need for public dramatics of mutual distrust mixed with fear and trembling.

Won’t it be a wonderful testimony to posterity, that we, in our momentous present, transform our country from a wild fire into a glittering light?

The Court will either uphold or overturn Justice Blenman’s ruling in the exercise of its final authority. A range of responses and reactions will flow and follow as various legal and political interests search for legitimacy in the loopholes between the spirit and the letter of the rule of law.

At stake are three critical issues worth exploring. First, before the entire world, our cultural values and national integrity are about to be brilliantly tried and attentively tested.  For Antigua and Barbuda to shine as a nation committed to the impulse of democratic governance, the leadership and follow-ship must demonstrate full respect for the potency of freedom and fairness built into our system of democracy.

Second, on full dramatizing display, will be our tendency to bequeath to our children thriving and surviving attributes in the face of storm and stress. We can pass on the angst of immeasurable misery, in which we become overburdened by our trials and perpetuate further social tension and emotional violence. Or we can revise our partisan mindset towards an infectious resolve, in which we oversee a more cheerful future during these crucial moments.

Third, although we have travelled an unimaginable short distance of 29 years together since our independence from Britain in 1981, and although we have irritated each other, we have also shared a love for family, politics, religion, laughter, beaches, cricket, carnival, grandparents’ stories, peace, gossip, and neighborly concerns.

Perhaps now is the time that political blindness, social rancor and power-hungry ambitions, must not live. We have every reason to emerge out of this of limbo-ism with uncommon strength. Shall we face our bitter nights of crossroads challenges with dignified reflection and action?

Ultimately, leaders do not achieve positive outcomes by imposing unnecessary constraints and forced limitations.  They provide ample opportunities for consensus building and conflict management. Governance through popular buy-in isn’t afraid of freedom of expressions. We ought always to encourage a national ethos where being our brother’s keeper and our sister’s neighbor is everybody’s business.

Let’s make Wednesday’s ruling a mirror reflection of a legend-making moment. Therefore, we should not unleash conditions that descend our nation into democratic decay. Right now, a history of dying growth or bountiful expansion dares us to seek the greater good. To the exact degree that we position ourselves to turn ‘Judgment Day’ into the most redemptive moment the nation has ever known, is to the same degree, that we give birth to responsible people-hood.

We the people will stand up and be counted on when the time comes. United we stand, divided we fall. While the world watches to see the reaction of a people, the red, white, yellow, black and blue will forever shine so that everyone will know that WE AS A PEOPLE WILL NOT WAVER OR FALL.

No Blood Bath, No Iron Fist Ruling, Let Peace and Freedom Ring

#12 I CAN READ » 2010-10-26 16:26

Besides your scholarly ruminations, clearly you have a pastoral caring side. All your articles and especially this one, call for virtue and cry against vice. If my people will listen to you and follow your sound advice, oh how better we will become. Each achieving, Each saluting, Each defending our national liberty. I like your prayful plea. It is deep and wide. I cried when I read it and had to read it again. Dr. Newton you cut through the chase and deal with the very soul of this country. Wish we had more pastors, lawyers, politicians, and community leaders who can arrest the people's attention and call us to order and ethics for such a time as this. Thanks man... Thanks again... I will pray for peace and for you Doc.

Wise Leadership part 3

#11 Attila » 2010-10-26 13:53

God of nations, let Thy blessings
Fall upon this land of ours;
Rain and sunshine ever sending,
Fill her fields with crops and flowers;
We her children do implore Thee,
Give us strength, faith, loyalty,
Never failing, all enduring
To defend her liberty.

Wise Leadership part 2

#10 Attila » 2010-10-26 13:52

Barak Obama knows that he has the world most best trained and equipped army at his disposal, but should he therefore use it to his discretion? Unlike his predecessor. I see your fear and hear your call at this eleventh hour. I would have expect to have heard more from our clergies, who in times of great despair should give spiritual guidance and lead the country and their followers to look up and have their faith and hope in the great universal being called GOD, ALLAH, JAH, JEHOVAH, JESUS. It seems like they also are in fear and cannot lead. Perhaps we all should therefore remember at this particular time in our destiny which will describe our history in years to come the words from our national Anthem. These words one should meditate on from time to time, cause it is not just a song that was written. There is a whole spirit behind it. And when this spirit comes alive it moves both young and old. And for this special time I specifically want to quote the last verse.

Wise Leadership part 1

#9 Attila » 2010-10-26 13:51

Dear Dr. Newton leadership requires men/women of wisdom. For it is easy for a leader to rather than to lead follow for fear of losing support from his chieftains. And one cannot lead from behind. First of all my believe is leaders are born not made. But one also must have the ambition to be the leader. Nelson Mandela was and still is for me a great leader. For even when imprisoned, he was able to lead, and lead wisely. Didn’t the entire world expect a blood bad in South Africa after his release from prison and subsequent rise to power. But great leaders like him do what is wise and not what is popular by the majority. So too many at this time looking for the obvious to occur in our beloved Country. But wise leaders will lead us in the right directions from the front. Leading with an iron fist in not the right way. We all know the powers that a government have at their disposal. A police without a gun is no less a police then one with a gun. So why does a police with a gun feels as if he is in more authority.

Judgement Day-Let Bygones to Bygones

#7 Dig It » 2010-10-26 10:45

Dr. Newton, good article! Obviously, we have a lot of work to do as a people! We will have to let bygones be bygones, and put the country's interest first, regardless of which part of the fence we stand! However, tomorrow's judgement shouldn't be a catalyst for change in terms of our "democracy," "partisan mindset" and "shared" love for each other! We should have been practicing these common values each day for if it's the last day of our lives! The problem is that most of us put everything else first, instead of national pride! Whatever tomorrow's outcome is, my main concern is good governance and accountability.

Nice Appeal

#6 City Girl » 2010-10-26 10:11

Where are all the haters Dr. Newton? It it a stretch for them to come out and showcase the folly of their venom. You are always pushing us to behave like angels even if you know there is alot of devil in us. Thanks for this moving national appeal. Can't you help write Lester and Baldwin speeches? These leaders don't know how to tap into the moment and hone in on the emotional intelligence hidden in the people. I hear you and will do as instructed!

DR. ISAAC NEWTON' S URGING

#5 RAWLSTON POMPEY » 2010-10-26 07:19

A riveting commentary, preceding events that may prompt negativity in behavioural responses. Those who have ears to hear, let them hear and hearken to your obviously carefully thought out suggestions. Seems only then that which you have posited primarily " ...rights of the people and ....justice of the land" may, in fact "..remain SACROSANCT. KEEP ON URGING.

Masterpeice Again

#4 Eldene Benta » 2010-10-26 06:58

So much pathos coming through this article. Healing words aplenty. You have made me pround again of being an Antiguan and Barbudan. Where are other sober voices? One thing Doc, you are not afraid to tell us the hard truth, to challenge us to do the right thing and to whip back into the line when we are off the beaten path. Thanks again for being so consistent with your articles. As a soldier in the Lord's army, I pray that others pray for peace and harmony. I predict that the UPP will lose the Court Case. I predict that the ALP will lose the bi-elections. I predict that the UPP will be returned to power. And I predict that after it all ends several politicians will lose their value. I pray for Dean and Jackie, For Gail and Baldwin and for Minister M, and his opponent. But I also predict that Minister M, will lose his seat.

preach on

Preach on Dr. Newton. I particularly, perhaps because I have a 4 month old daughter, like the statement "., on full dramatizing display will be our tendency to bequeath to our children thriving and surviving attributes in the face of storm and stress. We can pass on the angst of immeasurable misery, in which we become overburdened by our trials and perpetuate further social tension and emotional violence. Or we can revise our partisan mindset towards an infectious resolve in which we oversee a more cheerful future during these crucial moments"..

#2 my way of helping » 2010-10-26 04:29

I must say, i also think this day (d-day) is the day we should start to think positive and put away, sorry, throw away all negatives in our society.Greed, and hatred should be replaced with love for God, country and man.

It hurts me that my people are going through so much pain because I know we are capable of coming together and i know if we start to be selfless then ourself would not have less.

we (humanbeings) want to win so much that we forget about the most important thing, the people, the country, harmony, togetherness, God, fairness. I pray both parties would go back and make all these number one again.

If UPP would have called a election right after the judge ruling, I promise you, UPP would have been one of the most respected Government Party in the world to freely relinquish power oh wow, I am in awe right now thinking about it, Maybe I would have turned UPP. I am speaking on fairness hair not supporting ALP nor supporting UPP but i just crave an extraordinary Party and person, where are they?

Cautious

Dr. Newton, I can read the pain in this article. An Antiguans and Barbudans, thisis a time to sit and reflect where we have been and where we are heading to. "As quoted in your article. "we have also shared a love for famiyl, politics, religion, laughte, beaches, cricket, carnival, granparents, stories, peace, gossip and neighbourly concerns...." this is so, so true. Now, with true reflection, and honest thinking, I find myself just open to whatever comes; life has a way of working itself out. It is hard to concentrate on the great times we all have had in our island, and become he evny of many in the Caribbean. Now, we have investors waiting with bated breath as well to see the outcome. I never expected that we would be in a state of amazement.
