An Ugly Mas’ Turned Beautiful

An Ugly MasDear Editor, As one who has called for Carnival to clean up its act and return to its origins, I had the good fortune this year to compare the modern and ancient face of Mas’. One was hideous and ugly beyond recognition, while the other was a most beautiful sight to behold.

In the first portrayal, there were some shapely women in skimpy costumes dancing in a rage of sexual frenzy when the parade stopped at the corner of Popeshead and St. John’s streets, to allow the bottle neck of bands to clear.

Music was playing and the female dancers appeared as if they were in a competition to decide which one of them was the most vulgar and suggestive performer in the band.

What I am about to describe is a true story. It is not a hearsay version but an eyewitness account. While I looked on at what was taking place before me, I formed the opinion that the moving display resembled the sexual orgy of debauched vagabonds and not Carnival revellers.

But little did I know that there was worse to come. For there and then I saw a male member of the mas’ troupe chase and grab one of the half-naked women, force her to lay down on her back in the street and raped his helpless victim.

It happened in a matter of few yards from where I was standing, and before thousands of other amazed spectators.

Just before the assault was committed, the woman had shamelessly had one foot cocked on the motionless truck and allowed the man to do only what I had seen done by two copulating dogs on the public highway. Some onlookers may argue that she had invited the disgusting act upon herself. I beg to differ. She had already broken loose from the man and was yards away when she was captured and violated.

At length a friend went and rescued the helpless victim, who seemed embarrassed and ashamed, while the man, whose hair was dyed red, puffed up his chest like a proud rooster who had just threaded a reluctant yard fowl. He then held his hands in the air and danced away to the tune of a forbidden Road March song.

Although I am not a moralist, I slowly turned away my head in disgust. I tried to walk away and found that I couldn’t move another scene had arrested my attention and held me spellbound.

It had to be a miracle that was taking place for I saw at that moment the ugly mas’ turn into one of the most beautiful works of art. I was sure it was a dream, the vision was so lovely that I believe I had been transported back to the golden age of carnival when the festival was a lovely musical street theatre.

It didn’t take long to discover that the magnificent gods, goddesses and angels that had suddenly appeared before me was a dramatic creation of artistry and splendor by Calvin Southwell and his Beautiful People mas’ troupe. This presentation was out of this world.

To me, Band of the Year is an all hat award. The value has been diluted and over-run by too many categories. I would like to create a new top prize in its place to be called the critics award. This would go to the Best of the Best Bands of Year. The winner of this year’s critics award goes to the Beautiful People depiction of how an ugly mas’ can be turned into a thing of beauty.

This presentation convinced me that for carnival to survive it has to go back to its roots.

Disgusted

What is appalling to me is that there are people who are willing to condone this most abhorrent behaviour. This is what our culture has degenerated into? And then some of us ask why our children behave the way they do? Collectively we should speak out vociferously about this depraved conduct if we are to restore our society to some semblance of moral decency for our children.

Cheap plug!!!

#14 It Is Me » 2012-08-16 22:55

This sounds like a cheap plug for "Beautifull People's mass troupe". I thought he was going to mention the mass troupe "Just Friends" when he said it "turned into one of the most beautiful works of art" because they were the only troupe with dignity on the road. The "Beautiful People" troupe was full with ''skin showing skinning out girls" as well so I don't know what he is talking about ... just look at any carnival pics you will see!!!

This type of Mas is not unique to Antigua & Barbuda. Mas is played around the world in like fashion. Rio De Janero,Trinidad & Tobago, Labour Day in Brooklyn. Its just the signs of the times.

Rick James talking a bundle of crap - the ugly turn beautiful - he spoke as if this was his first MAS - like he don't know what goes on at MAS. It will keep getting more lawless as the years progressed - thats where the world is heading - so Rick get a life and talk some sensible things - wherever they have alcohol and revellers - they will have unbecoming behaviour - if you don't want to see MAS like this - DON'T GO!!!!!!

@TCS I think mr. james made his thoughts quite clear there were two situations that fall one into the other so he discribed it as best as he could, it's not what you saw but what he saw. To avoid volgarity as to what was discribed there were suppose to be band marshalls within the band to maintain order if they were not there that is the responsibility of the band and its organisers.

Has entertainment become synonymous with vulgarity?

#10 No longer surprised » 2012-08-16 16:15

Carnival and soca concerts represent nothing more than shameless orgies. The only way to see worse is to watch a porn film. Even official events (like the opening ceremony of the Caribbean Broadcasting Union conference held here this week), have resorted to raunchy entertainment with scantily clad women. And then we lament the rise in reported cases of HIV????? What else do we expect?

"An Ugly Mas Turned Beautiful"??? Mr. James, It's not a spectacular thing that during carnival festivities participants don colorful costumes. That is commonplace. What is amazing is that you chose to transition from a rape/assault account to discussing carnival costumes. No matter how brilliant the costumes are they pale in comparison to the ugliness that happened during the mas. I understand that this piece is your perspective, but I believe there are at least two stories here. Definitely not one that smoothly transitions from the first hand account of rape into talk of the glory of costumes and ideas for new prizes.

rape?? why did you use the word rape?? by legal definition rape has to be some form of penetration with or without a penile.

are you sure this wasn't some form of sexual assault or ha**ment? although, this would be difficult to ascertain due to the environment of sexual actions people around were into, etc.

Ironically, the same Romans and Greeks that Beautiful People was displaying were the same set of people who engaged in public orgies...go figure!

...6 and half a dozen...

#1 Jumbee Picknee » 2012-08-16 06:10

James, it dosen't matter the spin you put on it, mas as the creative artform, the cutural and historical splendor that it should be will never be as it was , at least in NOT in today's Antigua.
As a matter of fact, the same person who you so exemplifies as a creative 'genius' and in some eyes that might be true, but, a true story for you, Mr. Southwell was the first male I witnessed in 2003 depicting a female g-string as part of his costume while playing mas with Dynamics. In my eyes, to ourchildren, visitors etc, this to is vile and disgusting. The vulgar act which you described is most definitely deplorable, but 6 and half-a-dozen is one and the same. It depends from which perspective your viewing it from...THEY ARE ALL CHILDREN OF DIONYSUS...gree k god of wine, drunkeness,, lewdness, orgy and vulgarity.

IT'S A SODOM & GOMMORAH LIFESTYLE, IN OUR NATION AND IT'S FASHIONABLE...C HILDREN of DIONYSIS
