December 10 is being recognised as International Human Rights Day, and commemorates the adoption by the United Nations of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. The theme this year is “human rights defenders who act to end discrimination”.
To mark the occasion, British Foreign Secretary, Rt Hon William Hague MP, will release a video statement which highlights international cases of concern regarding human rights defenders and includes details of UK government policy on human rights, including the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s newly developed human rights web pages.
To view the video message visit the British High Commission’s web site at http://ukinbarbados.fco.gov.uk/en/
In line with the British government’s support for human rights, the British High Commission in Barbados has helped a number of charities and NGOs in a variety of areas, including work against domestic violence and support of women’s rights.
