New Jamaica PM Calls for Unity

PM Portia Simpson-MillerPortia Simpson-Miller, Jamaica's prime minister designate, issued a call for unity in the wake of her People's National Party (PNP)  victory on Thursday.

Simpson-Miller made history as the first woman to lead Jamaica politically. The PNP whipped the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) 41-22, according to preliminary results.

During her victory speech, she told the crowd, "This leader with her team will be working with all Jamaicans, as one Jamaican family, as we shape the future of Jamaica together."

Thursday's election was called a year ahead of the constitutional deadline. The PNP had been out of power since 1997.

Meanwhile, defeated Prime Minister Andrew Holness said, "Starting tomorrow we will be rebuilding. Our campaign for the next government starts tomorrow.

We are determined to serve the people of the country in the best way possible. ... It is clear to us however that the people of the country still have certain concerns apparently about the Jamaica Labour Party and we will be reflecting on those."

Holness also made history as the only one-term prime minister in Jamaica. He was also the youngest, at 39.

Simpson-Miller, 66, also known as "Sista P," served as Jamaica's prime minister when PJ Patterson resigned in 2006.

She said, “I am humbled by the support of the Jamaican people and I ask you to ensure that you greet Jamaica Labour Party supporters with love."

fnpsr unfortunately their former PM Bruce Golding, elected in 2007, allowed political expediance to cause him to form an aliance with someone who later caused him to lose the confidence of the Jamaican people. The guy, Dudas Coke, was a known drug dealer and wanted by the US. The PM then got involved in the extradiction request and tried to deny it. His being too involved caused a scandal (see www.caribbean360.com/index.php/news/jamaica_news/466302.html#axzz1i8Ca5zxi). The US also made threats about imposing sanctions on JA. In a way the saga some may say has echoes of the Leroy King mess. Anyway essentially the Jamicans looked at the mess their econonomy was in (Debt to GDP of some 130% *** similar to Antigua using IMF figures from the end of 2009) and decided that its best to elect a different politcal party

Congratulations to the PNP and its PM. I hope and pray they will be able to remedy the problems being faced in JA. This election is another reminder of the importance of the economy. I do recognize that this artice was not authored by Caribarena but I question the purported fact below:

Quote:
Holness also made history as the only one-term prime minister in Jamaica
Did the current PM not serve for only one term? She was selected by PJ Patterson/ PNP in 2006 and lost the subsequent 2007 election to Bruce Golding/JLP.
