Browne Says Gonsalves Talking Foolishness

Browne Says Gonsalves Talking FoolishnessAntigua St John's - Recent comments by Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines Dr Ralph Gonsalves on the issue of economic citizenship (EC) have been described as "foolishness".

Chairman of the opposition Antigua Labour Party (ALP) Gaston Browne was reacting to Dr Gonsalves’ statement that his country would not recognise EC granted to anyone by any of the territories in the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

In a radio interview over the weekend, Dr Gonsalves said he had campaigned against EC in his native land, and is philosophically opposed to the idea. He said only people who had attained citizenship in OECS countries through traditional means would receive the same rights and privileges in SVG.

The ALP chairman, who has been a vocal supporter of the EC initiative announced by the government, said Dr Gonsalves is just being "a bully," and urged OECS governments not to pay any attention to the SVG prime minister.

“How will he be able to differentiate between someone who attained citizenship through the EC programme from someone who attained it through traditional means,” he asked.

While he takes issue with Dr Gonsalves on the EC issue, Browne said he must however credit the SVG leader for being consistent on the matter.

”I must credit Dr Gonsalves for his consistency on the subject. I can, however, understand his situation, for I believe that when the EC programme was introduced in SVG, it was not properly conceptualised nor administered,” Browne noted.

He added that should SVG carry through on the threat, as stated by Dr Gonsalves, it may have very little effect on the programme, as SVG is not a high-demand destination, and people who acquire EC may not want to travel there.

He said even if the SVG implemented the ban, it would be difficult for the government to police it, unless it engages in profiling.

Browne is urging the Antigua and Barbuda government "not to be persuaded," and to stay the course.

MP browne i surprize you haven't jump in on the discussion. You are not a person that takes last lick but it seems you have to be very convincing to win over the people on this Economic Citizenship stuff. Tell that Musketeer to stop talking all that mess. The PM of SVG is right, and, there is no way this will be happening in Antigua, so Mr Browne and his party better be careful to put this on their manifesto.

ECONOMICS!

#12 Musketeer » 2012-03-28 20:44

I see no problem issuing a travel document to an investor who provides a major investment and a significant number of jobs! After all the UPP was against Stanford, then when his empire collapsed they blame all our economic woes on the collapse of the very empire!

By the way if you were able to offer 500 passports to the equivalent of a one million dollar investment over 5 years, it would equate to 500 million dollars over 5 years - that's nothing to scoff at.

We could then drop the PIT or lower the ABST to further reduce cost of living and stimulate the economy. Come on people - how many of our women run to the US, Canada and the UK to have babies? What does the host country gain? We seem to be a bunch of hypocrites!!!

What is ALP position

#10 The Wadadli Blogger » 2012-03-28 15:44

it's time the ALP make their position be known on this issue. I hear Weston against it on radio and Gaston for it in parliament. It's time the leader comes out and tell us his position. We already see Gaston's stand on this and one can just hope he never becomes the PM!!!

Who is talking foolishness

#9 Mr Unity » 2012-03-28 15:38

There goes another pot hole in the road towards caribbean unity ... why such harsh words (foolishness). Why not just say you disagree with the statement. Gaston didn't even have to answer that (which is what he should of done ...SHUT UP). He knows nobody is coming to get a passport from Antigua to travel to another OECS country. It's the USA, Canada & the UK people would be looking to go not St Vincent. The Pm of St Vincent have the right to talk and say what he wants when it comes to his country without Gaston's approval so I don't know why a deputy leader of an opposition party is running up his mouth and dissing people on something so irrelevant as this.

no value

Up to date Gaston has failed to indicate what exactly does the EC bring of value to economy of Antigua and Barbuda. Gonsalves is right. How can you exchange your passports for some coloured pieces of paper. I know the ALP folks have no problems with selling our prime lands to whosoever but passports is a stretch even for them. When those rich Saudis, Yemenis, Syrians with questionable ties to fundamentalist groups start travelling with Antiguan passports we can kiss Visa free travel for us Antiguans to Canada and Europe. Ask any Dominican what happened to them after they introduced EC.

Think Long-term in love and unity pt 2

With the "madness" that take place in the world, I believe that we have to careful in granting EC to the "wrong" hands. And, does EC really work or even "stimualte" economies, I believe the MP should give the people some insights why he supports the idea? Where is the "statistics" on that? And, does giving one EC means they could do as they pleased on these islands by not paying taxes or even allow themselves or their friends to walk through our immigration gates without been detected? Unless the MP can prove EC is the way to go, I believe he will be ust making himself proned to arrows and perhaps speaking "foolishness!"

I am a BIG supporter of the ALP but I am waiting patiently to see the manifesto for the 2014 election, because any indication of EC, count me out of voting for the ALP.

As the song goes "Uniting these West Indian lands may take us generations!" We just can't unite if we are divided in goals and ambitions! This makes "integration" of these islands "impossible" as our leaders can't see "beyond our shores!" The EC is a divided issue that needs to be looked at in a fine tooth-comb before we even "embraced" it or totally send it to "Guassa!" In these days and times, long-term strategies are best to spur economic growth in Antigua or the region! The PM of SVG is a known supporter of economic "equality" when it comes to his country and the region! I wouldn't believe he would be totally "ignored" in his stance against EC! I am glad to see our good gentleman and MP praised the SVG PM for his "consistent" on the matter. It is up to people and the region to decide which sides to be on when it comes to EC. In that, we do ourselves the "injustice" by selling ourselves and people of the region short when it comes to economic policies and ideas to benefit these islands!

Ya'll sell our land, now our citizenship, what's next the citizens? Come on man is nothing above having a price? Love Gonsalves stance on this. Wouldn't mind Antigua being assimilated by SVG right about now.

UNPATRIOTIC AND DOWNRIGHT TREASON

#2 YOUTH ELIJAH » 2012-03-28 09:24

As a young patriotic Antigua and Barbudan, I must say that it is downright unpatriotic and I would go so far as to say an act of treason to the citizens of our nation or any country, to have leaders trying to or even considering putting a price tag on our sovereignty...

I support Mr. Gonsalves 1000% on his stance about Economic Citizenship. The idea that any Parliamentarian is seeking to have the rights and privileges of citizenship to be sold, highlights the reason for the lacking good governance and civics in our country; where governments past and present continue NOT to take pride or work to build wealth for our nation but instead consider selling or obligation our nation, our people and our resources to the highest bidders... SAD SAD SAD SAD SAD  NO TO ECONOMIC CITIZENSHIP !!!!
