Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer described the Antigua Labour Party’s (ALP) claims of requesting international observers, to monitor upcoming elections, as humorous.
“His talk about calling on those organizations to become involved in the impending General Election is therefore nothing more than posturing,” says the nation’s leader.
Referring to his address at the opening of the CARICOM Summit held in Antigua, in July, the Prime Minister says he placed his call for election observers on public record.
Reiterating the statement he made six months ago, during his annual New Years Day address, he says “Elections in Antigua and Barbuda are constitutionally due in the first half of 2009. With all assembled here as my witnesses, I guarantee that Antigua and Barbuda’s General Election will be a model in fairness no matter how vigorous the contest.”
The nation’s leader made a public appeal to CARICOM, the Organisation of American States and the Commonwealth Secretariat to expect early invitations for observer teams to be ready to monitor the upcoming general elections.
“Upon advising the Governor General of the dissolution of Parliament and the date for a poll to be taken,” he continues, “I shall immediately dispatch official invitations to the Secretaries General of CARICOM, the Organisation of American States, the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Free and Fair Elections League to monitor the systems and preparations for the General Election and for the conduct of the Election.”
