Asot Says He's Sorry

MP Asot MichaelAntigua St. John's - Parliamentary Representative for St Peter Asot Michael has offered an apology to his constituents for neglecting them for several years and not paying enough attention to the concerns of the constituency.

Addressing an Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ALP) townhall meeting in Parham on Tuesday night, Michael not only said he was sorry, but laid the blame squarely at the feet of the United Progressive Party (UPP) government for preventing him for performing his duties effectively as a parliamentary representative.

“Since 2004, or for the past nine years, the UPP has hounded several ALP politicians, especially me,” he said. “The UPP government has sued us, using government resources. They caused us to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to defend ourselves against frivolous Lawsuits. Their lawsuits all proved unfounded, frivolous and lacking in evidence, they were very expensive to defend and time consuming. I should have been in the constituency more often. I humbly apologise.”

Michael gave a commitment to redouble his efforts in the constituency in the coming months.

New Party Political Leader Gaston Browne noted that the economy had recorded over 26 percent of accumulated decline over the past five years, and this has negatively impacted just about every household in the country.

“We are all getting poorer as a result, and this has led to a worsening in the quality of life experienced by ordinary men and women in the society,” he said.

The meeting had all the trapping of a major political event - supporters bussed in, the support of most of the elected members and caretakers, and a charged atmosphere. The townhall meeting was held at the Parham Primary School.

While it was not promoted as such, this could possibly mark the start of perhaps a year-long campaign by the opposition party.

After addresses by several speakers, many of whom exceeded their allotted 10 minutes, the question and answer segment was reduced to half an hour.

A constituent raised the issue of unity within the ABLP, and said too many people were suffering while the party leaders tore at one another.

But Browne said while there was a lot of bitterness after the November 25 convention, where he emerged winner, there has been a closing of ranks in recent times, evidenced by the sharp decline in the number of negative calls to the radio station about this issue.

I love my country and I am from Parham but not of Parham. Too long now that the people of Parham have been rejected and lack representation by both parties for years. Parham people need to get rid of these representatives and look to GOD for guidance to select a new representative that will have the entire community at heart.
All that Parham is known for is a “safe seat” for the ALP which translates to nothing for the people of Parham only Joseph Myers, Longford Jeremy and Asot Michael benefitted in furthering their political careers. Please find someone from the community to represent the people.

Yes, i agree with you all, he should have made time and contribute to his constituency. I agree, however, did we also consider being accused wrongly? Did we consider the emotional, psychological and financial strain?

I read a few bloggers and i agree with them all but not one acknowledge the otherpart of the story and accept it does have effects. May not be to the extent the minister said but it does. May be it is why i am the most unorthodox blogge here, i consider all things. I learn from my friends as well as my enemies.

Ever notice when the representative' s party in power, things happen in their constituency and they make you feel they doing it out of their own pocket. But when they are elected but their party not in power nothing gets done because the govt. bad playing them. They making the same salary in both cases, but have no money when their party not in power. In other words, when they in power, they using our taxes in their constituency to make themselves look good, rather than for the benefit of all. Check both sides and see if its not true!

I don't know what's worse, Asot or the Leadership of the ALP that continues to allow him to form the x with people. Lester birthed him now Gaston is sustaining him because he needs x but it has to come to an end MUST come to an end because nothing lasts but the word of God. Many that he comes into contact with seems to be afraid of this man! Everybody knows who he is! He is the Dictator in the ALP and that is most frightening in the face of a UPP defeat! Baldwin out in Asot!!!!!!!!!!! !!! Where o where is Moses to lead us out of this!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!

The leader of the ABLP, Gaston Browne was not true in stating that Antiguans are getting poorer. I challenge him to reveal his assets from the time the UPP came into office and it will clearly let us see that he is untrue. And for the other member Asot, he is looking for sympathy. Antiguans wake up and stop begging your reps for personal favors in so doing you will always be treated without respect. This seems like the political campaign has began.

Maybe he's sick of all the begging you antiguans do when he comes through the constituency! A politician can't even drive through without being bothered by those that are too lazy to fend for themselves.

But then again, the PM travels the world with his hand out so what else would you expect of his 'subjects'.

Figure out what you as antiguans can give to the world vs what you can take from it!!!!!! It's 2013 and tourism is STILL you only major industry.....co me on now :-*

Oh,Here we go again with another one of those deceitful and dishonest apology. Why can't Asot just take responsibility for what wrong he has done his constituents instead of laying his problems down at the feet of the United Progressive Party (UPP)? So,in other words,he had absolutely no control over his own action - no even over his failure to come to them much earlier than now and explain his situation. A really true leader would be taking the blame for his mistakes instead of looking to take focus off himself.

for 9 years he was busy? LOL. what a set a people. anyway leading up to Christmas i saw 3 trucks filled with presents and goodies heading east. there is no doubt that our elected officials are unethical and some have benefited handsomely from public office, example fencing scandal ,$ 600,000 for a bathroom,8.5 million dollar stand etc. The difference between those is the perception that x gives back. LOL. i doubt the persons making comments are from st .peters. it has been tried and proven that as long as someone brings the goods that one will win again. lets face it in good economic times you can buy a seat now the country bruck, mash up by UPP its gonna be easier to win. UPP is toxic.

Sorry ? sorry? now is not the time to be sorry that will come a bit later when you have been given good reason to be sorry and be assured you will be really sorry then ( for your self).
Now is the time to be afraid because you are about to reap what you have sowed in the alp.
As a matter of fact making an excuse while saying sorry means you are not sorry at all.so take your sorry and stick it where the sun does not shine and Gaston you are the one that should be sorry for associating your self with this Gollum, sorry for continuing to fool the people on the WWP junk generators ,sorry for not speaking out against this in public when the time was right. In sum you guys are a sorry bunch but chef feels more sorry for his beloved Antigua

It is the people of St. Peter's that elected you. Not the people of St.Kitts/Nevis.
You jump on plane and roam the world with the Prime Minister of that country and now come to us with your bull** excuse. You are all about money. You cant help it is your culture; but we voted for you not because you are Asot Michael but because you represent the ALP. We will continue to vote that way irrespective to who is the candidate. You must understand that we are an intelligent people, thanks to Papa Bird. We know that you cannot get any work for the constituency done under the UPP but we expect to see your backside in the constituency and to understand that, in the future, when there is a Convention, you no longer go out there and buy delegates, the Constituency will pick them. It is WE THE PEOPLE. NOT YOU ASOT.

I had a dream, I went to a celebration/par ty, the entire meal's theme was based on the sea from sea moss to conch to snapper. However, the DJ/selector only played Chalice's 'Nightmare Party' and Short Shirts 'Disco Dumplin.' They were played in Rock, Hip-Hop, Classical, Symphony, Ska, Dancehall, Country versions. There was dancing but the only couple who danced all night long, was Adolph Hitler and Mussolini who had a fan-mask which he used to cover his face at times.
Mussolini introduced Hitler and his theme was The Virgin Mary.
Hitler theme was about The Birds and the attempt by the younger ones to destroy the Fascist Party.

Chef is sorry too , sorry that this is the caliber of representation we have been doomed with. Does it not strike strange that even now Asot likes to blame every one else for the mess he is in and fails to see that all his demons are of his own making.
Sorry will not cut it you have been weight and found wanting , you have had your time now please move on and find something else to do, because begging for forgives means normally means you are indeed guilty.so stop making lame excuses. isn't it enough that you are a legend in your own mind yet at the same time the MP who abandoned his so called beloved constituency ?there is no excuse for such behavior, stop blaming UPP for this one . They are a total waste but you Asot appear to be closer to the UPP than the ALP.

Political Expediency & Lying Excuses

#10 Professor » 2013-03-07 08:34

Asot's excuse reminds me of the man who tells his girlfriend "SWETHEART, MY LOVE FOR YOU KNOWS NO LIMIT ... I WOULD DO ANYTHING IN THE WORLD FOR YOU, BUT I CANNOT VISIT YOU WHEN IT RAINS, BECAUSE I DO NOT LIKE DRIVING IN THE RAIN.

What happened to continuation of Caribarena's series of articles on IHI? Did someone apologize to CA in exchange for killing the REAL EXPOSE?

ALP is a g**roots party, but it has always operated from the TOP down. The disunity within the party was never really about the supporters, so the negative calls over the airwaves is in no wise a barometer of unity or healing.

It has always been an issue of ALP leaders and political heirachy not being able to get along. Today, those factions are at worst odds than they have ever been in the history of the party.

Poor constituents of St. Peters. Why did Asot not tell them the truth? them too beg and they were probably depleting his resources. But, as you know the culture in that particular constituency to be one of dependence on parliamentarian s. Dont like to work but get hand-outs. The amount of school fee he had to pay, funeral to take care of and weddings to contribute to, he had to be missing in action for a while. You feed them everything and they will eat (even the bs sprewed at the town hall meeting). God save the delinquency in St. Peters.

Honesty is the best policy Asot, so please stop giving excuses! You have not been in court everyday since 2004; you've done other things outside of the courtroom since then, and your constituency is only but a few minutes drive from St. John's. You guys continue to project yourselves as always too busy to talk to the people you represent; however, when one looks around the country it is extremely hard to see the fruits of the hard labor that had supposedly kept you guys so busy.
