Lone Wolf Protesters Confronted By Police

Lone Wolf Protesters Antigua St. John’s - The Lone Wolf protesters had yet another run-in with law enforcement officials on Tuesday as they gathered outside the Chinese Embassy reiterating demands for answers on the controversial Wadadli Power Plant and the resignation of Chinese Ambassador to Antigua Liu Hanming.

The picket action began around 9:30 am and lasted until around noon, but was met with confrontation towards the end.

Reports are that lawmen arrived on the location around 10:40 am and demanded a stoppage to the activity and the clearance of the roadway directly in front of the Chinese Embassy. This, of course, was ignored by the picketers who claimed to be within their rights to perform the act.

Spokesperson for the group Vere Bird III recounted that the police seemed to have gotten desperate when they approached him, and proceeded to insinuate threats of an assault charge.

Bird III was at the time holding a mop stick for a flagpole behind his back.

“The Police asked me if I am assaulting him. How am I going to answer that question?” Bird said.

He added that after some back and forth chatter he did inform the lawman that if he was looking to make an arrest on a “trumped up charge” he could go right ahead.

“I told them listen, if y’all want to arrest us then go ahead because at the end of day I have six lawyers in my family and you and the government would be sued,” Bird III said.

The police made no arrests.

The spokesman said the group’s motive on Tuesday was simple and straightforward, like the countless times before when the group demanded answers to the generator fiasco and for all those culpable to be held accountable.

“We got old generators. We were supposed to get lower electricity bills, so what advantage are we getting? We cannot say new generators because they are less efficient. They might as well give us back the old generators because we were paying less money,” Bird said.

#15 Maco » 2012-08-23 19:53

A number of boggers alluded to Vere 3 past problems, all i can remember is an unfortunate traffic accident that can happen to all of us drivers. Vere 3 is not the won responsible for WPP rip off. He is displaying courage that most antiguans lack. He is not afraid to stand up unlike the other week kneed. Go vere go. They cant stop you!

I have never seen a nation living in so much fear then present Antigua. It is therefore so odd to see that we have all these democratic institutions in place. No one would believe us if we told them that we have a freedom of speach act and a freedom of information etc. etc. but we cannot speak freely and we cannot get information. We have an Onbudsman we have a Public Accounts committe but non of these offices are really working. just shams for the outside world to make believe we have true democracy at work in Antigua. Glad some people do not sit by and are willing and ready to stand and fight for the right of many. People such as the Min. of Helps, Lone Wolf and others.

it's in the blood#1

#11 Observer » 2012-08-22 18:37

Some of us have the genes from our forefarthers in our blood. That gene could be a good and a bad one. VB III just has the fighting gene of his gramdfather in his blood. Papa could have left the struggle at the time alone in fear of being put to jail or perhaps killed by the then plantocrats who would not have spent a night in jail for that. But he and ofcourse others around him chose to standup and fight. And that's a freedom we now enjoy and take for granted. A freedom that is slowly but surely drifting away, and taken away from us. As you heard from so many they fear victimization of the political pundits.

Hold on to the job. The Wolf will be making enough noise in the coming weeks for all our supporters that can't make it out on the picket line because of victimization. We have something special planned for October, after all its is "the magic month".

The Petition to The President of China will start next week and I will be on the radio telling everyone how we are going to execute it and get it to China. The period for the Petition will be from next week until December.

Long Live Antigua & Barbuda

gratefull to Lone Wolf

#6 Onlooker » 2012-08-22 09:47

I can only be gratefull that in this time of intimidation that a few are willing to standup for the rights of many. I have to admit. You will not see me there for fear of victimization. Whcich is so ranpant in this country. You ahve to watch who you talk to and what you say. Cause UPP is vindictive. They only give work to those they believe are party supporters. Anyone else should leave Antigua or die. But I tell you what goes around will come around. One day for you one day for me. I just fear for the youth.

It is sad to see how politicians only whehn they are in power will usen the police for their dirty works, without regards for law. If a law is being broken you cannot find police. But now because of the political pressure our policemen are being miss-used to do the dirty works and they so foolishly adhere to this. The police should be strong enough to tell the politician that they will not be used for political fights. But then again we have seen what happened to the Cannadian mounties and to Pompey and others. Out you go.

The police officers showing up is just one big SHAM! Of course they could not arrest the Lone Wolf Protestors because they have not broken the law. Why not go after Baldwin who broke the law by not receiving Parliamentary approval for the "Wadadli Power Can't"

KEEP UP THE PRESSURE!!!! Oh how they wish this issue would "go away" or be swept under the carpet. Thank you LWP for keeping this MAJOR issue alive and kicking.

Vere Bird lll is fighting so hard to project himself on the public. He is fighting so hard to qualify as the next “Bird” to take over the leadership of the ALP – This is what Lester been hoping for, for so long – Young Bird’s past problems still continue to plague him – will the Antigua people ever forget?

Lone Wolf and his followers are wasting their time and need to leave the Chinese alone. Picket the Prime Ministers Office, picket APUA, picket the Minister of Finance. The Chinese are not our accountable to us, our Leaders are and they are the ones who should be targeted. Leave the Chinese alone
