Antigua St. John's - The Lone Wolf Protestors strapped on their marching shoes and were back on the streets of St. John's on Tuesday after being away for almost a month.
Carrying the Taiwanese and Tibetan flags and placards, the small group of demonstrators marched from outside the Government House to Shoul's Toys and Gift Store on Newgate Street before journeying to the V C Bird bust demanding that government release documents on the Wadadli Power Plant.
At one point, group president Vere Bird III recounted that the governor general, who was passing by in a vehicle, rolled down her window to wave to them.
Their response was to try handing her a Lone Wolf t-shirt that bears their logo.
The chief spokesperson said they do not intend to let up, though it has been about six months since they started the weekly protests.
"We were going to have a beginning, a middle and an end because we said we weren't going to stay forever, but so many people have been giving us support we formed a friendly society. We just got a certificate from the Friendly Society Registry on August 1," Bird said.
Bird stated that the rising cost of electricity is evidence that the generators have not resulted in lowering rates, especially for the country's poor.
"That is the main evidence to show that something is wrong," he said.
The Baldwin Spencer-led Cabinet has agreed to allow a tour of the power plant but has not set a date for this to be done.
Though Bird welcomed this, he said the documents should still be released prior to such a tour.
"The period of giving birth to a child is how long it took them, a government that prides itself on transparency, to agree to show the plant to the people they serve."
The main opposition Antigua Labour Party has disassociated itself from the group, though many of the Lone Wolf members are ALP affiliates.
The young agitator said he remains unperturbed by this.
"I get a lot of calls from the average Antiguan who is interested in the procurement of those generators. I really can't speak for the politicians because they speak from both sides of their mouth," Bird said.
The group is planning to circulate a petition next week pressing the government to release the power plant documents.
On Wednesday, Lone Wolf will hold its first executive meeting since being named a friendly society. This is a precursor to a general meeting expected to be held by month’s end.
