Humphreys Marches Again

Humphreys Marches AgainAntigua St. John's - Eugene ‘Minister of Helps’ Humphreys led the second of what is to be a continuing series of weekly marches through the city on Thursday to protest against the longstanding controversial Wadadli Power Plant saga and the Fencing issue that have dominated the local media for the past several months.

Humphreys told Caribarena that the marches would undoubtedly continue until a commission of inquiry is held into the WPP matter or until the Police Commissioner decides not to honor another request for him to protest.

Thursday’s protest was supported by some two dozen marchers, a fair proportion of whom were clearly identified as supporters of the Antigua Labour Party.

The protest featured the unveiling of an effigy boasting the image of Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer on its blue-bottled head. Some of the protesters opted to batter the effigy with steel shafts and pipes.

Addressing the marchers, Colin Sampson said the march was one of “witness” that there are people in the country that will not stand to what “amounts to dictatorship” in Antigua & Barbuda. He urged that everyone stand firm and commit themselves to the drive for answers in “the most contentious issue in the history of Antigua & Barbuda.”

He noted that his decision to speak at the first march last week has led some persons to attempt to label him as “Labour”. This notion he firmly rejected.

“At no time will I ever be Labour,” he told the gathering, suggesting that his political stance was independent.

Stating that he was in no way condemning those who support the opposition party, Sampson spoke of the role of the opposition party in the Westminster system of government. He pointed out that under this system the opposition party becomes the natural beneficiary of governmental misbehavior, and chided the ruling United Progressive Party for “giving aid and comfort” to the ALP by its ill-considered actions.

He observed that based on his understanding; the WPP project was valued before it was researched, which opened the door for the value complications being seen today.

Other speakers included ALP spokesman Lionel ‘Max’ Hurst, who says the PM has no intentions of following the laws of the land. Hurst congratulated Humphreys who has developed a name for himself as a citizen struggling to ensure that governments live by the standards they pledged themselves to while in opposition.

“You can’t take US$52 million of our money and blow it and not give us any answers,” Hurst said. “Somebody was enriched, and we won’t find out until there is a Commission of Inquiry. We can’t continue to have a government like that.”

Lawyer Ralph Francis told those in attendance that the matter at hand was “very serious”, and despite the differences in political experiences for each individual in Antigua & Barbuda, it is one that should command the attention of each and every citizen and resident.

Why Martin Luther King, when Antigua already has Leroy King???

Leaders are a product of the "culture", and Antigua is getting it's due.

#10 Observer » 2012-07-20 16:33

What people need to understand is that the PM has for years done all he could to remove the ALP and now he is in the driver seat non of this will even stirr him to action. He is mumm when it comes to things like this. So as Dr. Cort said you could march from here to MacNiche mountain not a thing will happen.

Minister of Helps / Rosa Parks

#8 tenman » 2012-07-20 14:21

Helps keep following your conscience. You show via your action an understanding that government must be transparent and accountable. You have taken the time to specifically point out where government has gone awry. I recall your providing evidence that the transport board was duplicating number plates. For your advocacy you have been beaten by law enforcement officials. You are our modern day Rosa Parks in your refusal to conform to immoral dictates. As for me, trust that I will join you in protesting both from the comforts of my house and on the road

Why not join the march?

#4 Onlooker » 2012-07-20 08:31

I do not understand the ALP supporters. They have the same concerns but just because the march is called and held by a non party activist they are not joining the march is their numbers. If it is the issues you are concern about you should march no matter who holds thr march. It is your oppertunity to demonstrate your protest about the issues. It should really not matter which party holds the march. The occupy movement was not politically driven. So next time all those people who call on the radio for a march please join the protest. Bring your own plackard. Even The Lone Wolf.

#3 Walters » 2012-07-20 07:34

Where was Lester? Where was Maulwyn? I didn't see Gail either? Looks like they fall off the bandwagon? I bet if 10,000 marched last week, they would have been there up front and present please again!

Shame how they now abandon Humphries?

One Aim, One Truth, One Destiny, greetings, for it's a new day and not only am I thankfull to Jah for the opportunity to witness another day feeling positively blessed, I also thank Jah, that even though WE on the islands of Antigua, Barbuda & Redonda have several negative issues plauging us presently, which we can eradicate with respect, cooperation, positive 'looooooooong looooooong, long garlin time ago' love for our fellow huemans, we MUST also be thankfull, that we don't have the physical violence such as in the middle east, parts of South America, parts of Europe and even some American City's
So march in Peace, Stand up for your TRUE RIGHTS and don't give up the fight. Jah's positive blessings to ALL.
