Gaston Disapproves of Lone Wolf Remarks

Gaston disapproves of Lone Wolf RemarksAntigua St. John's - Chairman of the Antigua Labour Party (ALP) Gaston Browne has disapproved what he terms the “debased articulations” by lone wolf protestor Vere Bird III against Chairman of the United Progressive Party (UPP) and Finance Minister Harold Lovell during a protest last Tuesday outside the ministry headquarters.

The statements by Vere Bird III had provoked angry responses by the Minister of Finance, whose responses were also deemed inappropriate by many.

“In the circumstances, I cannot, in good faith, condone the type of debased articulations by Vere Bird III and others under the guise of a picket,” Browne said.

The St. Johns City West MP said he welcomed any group or individual joining the cause in opposing the poor choices of the government, “and any attendant protest to rid this country of the UPP Government in the public's interest.”

Browne reminded the public that he too, “on one occasion”, stepped out of line and made certain “inappropriate remarks” about Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer in retaliation to certain “slanderous statements” the PM had made against him. But being the bigger man, Browne said, “I subsequently admitted fault responding in kind to PM Spencer and apologized even though my remarks were provoked.

“Similarly, I believe that Minister Lovell's response even though provoked was inappropriate … Let us as Antiguans and Barbudans, conjoin in raising the level of political discourse that is deserving of a maturing nation,” he said.

Many Caribarena readers have also openly come out against the choice of words used in Lone Wolf pickets, calling it counterproductive to the purpose of the action.

“I find it very distasteful that Lone Wolf, as he calls himself, would ask a question over and over about “batty”. How can you take this guy as being a serious person when he does nothing to elevate the discussion? ... Lone wolf should have been told more than he was told. He is becoming a big joke,” one reader said.

Caribarena.com spoke with Vere Bird III about the group’s approach to getting answers from politicians and as far as he was concerned the group has been somewhat soft in their dealings.

“We are not only going to keep it up, we are going to amplify it. We have chosen our tactics. Anyone who feels they could do better can come and show us how it is done,” Bird said.

He noted however that he doubted strongly that any of the group’s biggest critics would ever step on the picket line but would opt to maintain the role of sideline detractors rather than stand up for what they believe in.

“I doubt they would be man or woman enough to come and picket for what they believe in. I don't pay attention to people like these. They are too spineless. We are going to be attacking anybody. We are not going to defame them but we will be making certain to make politicians feel embarrassed and uncomfortable while they go about squandering our money,” Bird said.

Another picket action is expected today (Tuesday). Bird III said a picket with numbers as small as the lone wolf can easily be forgotten, so tactics like these are sometimes warranted to leave a lasting impression of not only the group but also its purpose.

“If you are struggling to get 20 people in an island of 100,000 to come out and picket for their rights on a weekly basis, say something that will annoy the minister or hold up a Taiwanese flag and piss off the Chinese,” Bird said.

He added, “We will be embarrassing everyone as much as possible. Those who criticize let them know we have more t-shirts and placards anytime they are willing to show us how to do the business. To the Antiguans the anti-man act is more important that the power plant, the sidewalks and the fences.”

I am at a lost about what the Lone Wolfs and Bird 111 says. I believe Bird 111 and the Lone Wolfs are in order. UPP pass 18(6) and asking a member of the UPP if he support ** may soud hash but in order, we say we are a christian nation and my christian Bible tells me its an "abomination" no man shoud lie with man as he would a woman. If they want to seperate the "sheep from the goat" questions MUST be asked ... I agree with the Wolfs 15 more to go. You cannot understand that the wolfs are systimically stripping them apart. Come on Gaston get with the programme

John French II if the government is having problems paying now, how could adding more debt, make it easier for them to pay. Its clear that the original debt can be settled for much less than 20 million usd and most likely even less than ten million usd but someone instead comes up with this contrivance. Then there is the added condition that if government breaches the new agreement(defau lts), there will be a 8 million usd penalty (the debt 40% debt forgiveness is rescinded), which then makes the debt around 32 million usd

I support the lone wolf 100%

#25 sitco » 2012-07-17 20:14

The lone wolf is the most effective group against the UPP government at present. They use the same tactics that the Americans used to gain their independence from the UK in the late 1700's. Come on ALP, you need to be more proactive to get rid of this evil UPP government that will destroy Antigua.

breaking of the Finance and admin act continues

#24 tenman » 2012-07-17 17:38

While we argue over the government breaking the finance and admin act with the WPP, and the PM reacts that it was simply an over sight. In a recent interview he claimed they had no intention to have to use the law enacted during the ALP time. Strange thing is the debt for conservation swap which MP Baptist advocates, will see us again incurring further debt and there is no plan to take this measure to parliament (google "Workshop to Develop Antigua & Barbuda’s Conservation and Climate Adaptation Trust" and see table 8 which list the steps). Page 36 of the same document basically shows that the debt swap will see us with more debt. It is claimed that the current debt stands at 20 million USD, yet, in my calculations, the debt swap will see us owing 24 million USD (12 million USD - 8.5% interest, after the 40% debt forgiveness and two new loans 3.5 million usd and 8.5 million USD at 5% interest). The 3.5 million USD is expected to be used to get Brazil to sell the debt to a soon to be created local conservatory (ABCCAT). ABCCAT will then extend 40 debt forgiveness to government.

Long Live Antigua and Barbuda

#23 Vere C. Bird III » 2012-07-17 17:32

I have been to Pickets that Gaston Browne has organized and the chants put the fear of God into the Government, like "Jump High Jump Low Baldwin Spencer got to Go", and my personal favourite "We represent the ALP, ALP, ALP, we represent the ALP and Baldwin got to go". The Lone Wolf say backup with that lightweight stuff. There isn't anything defamatory in asking someone if they like **.
Unlike Gaston Browne I have never lead the ALP to the polls with a photo list that was not required by law or even seen by the candidates to scrutinize and I have never been sued for putting my foot in my mouth like Gaston was by the Prime Minister.

No taxation without representation

#22 tenman » 2012-07-17 17:17

Just could not help seeing similarities with what obtains in Antigua vs the US Dec. 16, 1773. You basically have Vere Bird III shouting politicians must be held accountable, while the chairman tries to ensure things do not get out of hand.
Quote:
While Samuel Adams tried to reassert control of the meeting, quite a few Bostonians left the Old South Meeting House and headed toward Boston Harbor. Later that evening, a group of 30 to 130 men, some of them dressed as Mohawk Indians, forced their way onto the three tea ships, and, over the next three hours, dumped all 342 chests of tea into Boston Harbor.

I am of the opinion that it is past time for GB (and sixexick/s) to take Mr. Astaphan’s advice and stop trying to undermine party, and therefore country, for what one can only assume is political, equaling xixaxxial, gain…If it cannot be people and country first (the real definition of a representative) then step down and go back to private life. It has become very obvious who is fighting for their country in the true meaning and who is not.

clash of loyalties

#15 the clash » 2012-07-17 12:31

I think there is a major clash of loyalties going on here. Some are loyal to Gaston, and defend his statements. Some are ALP Loyalists but don't like Gaston, and will defend the Lone Wolves. Others yet are just devoted to hating the UPP. From outside looking in, I can say this.
1. The Lone wolf group had a good start, and ultimately, are well intentioned. They are also one of the stronger forces working for truth today.
2. The whole ** act is inappropriate. Bird should look to draw attention by setting a good example, something politicians don't do in Antigua, and by demanding the rights we expect as citizens.
3. Gaston is right, both Lovell and the lone wolf acted inappropriately , and like him or hate him, he makes a good point.
4. Gaston actions are in no way a betrayal of the cause, nor does it take away pressure on the UPP. In fact, I believe the UPP are waiting for the lone wolf group to take the wrong step, so they can hush them up. The lone wolf is swimming with sharks, and they should heed gaston's words.

Correction and final thoughts

#11 Dig It » 2012-07-17 11:45

To my fellow bloggers and the reading John-Public, in the "title" line I meant to say ..."NOT personal attacks." I hope I didn't "provoked" anyone, as I am not "perfect" and trying to "re-connect" with the dissatisfied "electrorates!" If some of us are so concern with the "tactics" of the Lone Wolf, why not do better than them? Or, why not go as far to make a "citizens arrest" with all the "corrupt" practices in the country? The problem we have in this country is that too many of us allowed our "poliquitcians" to think and act for us! That is why so many of us can't see no "wrong" in them, despite the efforts of a few to get things "right!" And, from my experience, these elected parliamentarian s are in-bed with each other, so they could stand-up for one another, and, not take the peoples plight "seriously!" So, if all the "Flintstones" of this world want to take my post out of context, tell dem me say "who the cap fit, let them wear it." Me garn!

I can remember hearing some tiome ago a now Minister of the UPP Government, with others FORCED their way into the OFFICE of a then ALP Ministers OFFICE.That i believe was not LEGAL.
What the LONE WOLF is doing is not against the LAW,as long as they above board and are not breaking any LAWS,they have all rights to get the GOVERNMENT'S ATTENTION by ALL LEGAL MEANS.
It is time the CRITICS within the ALP start putting FIRE UNDER THE UPP Government for all the LAWS they have broken OR GET WITH the LONE WOLF (force mek water goo up hill) .

The reality is !

#9 NIL NIL » 2012-07-17 11:18

The reality is this lone wolf picket does nothing to amplify the true issues nor to spur anyone to action. I hear the "some bloggers" state "this kind of action is required", how many of them really want to ally themselves with a group asking the Fin Min about "**" where does this take the national debate ? More importantly what does that impart to the rest of the nation and the world watching ?

If Vere wants to be taken seriously he must be serious and also weigh his actions and their consequences, his actions to date smack of poor planning and have availed all they ever will, expletives met with expletives and rowdy ill-disciplined behavior.

I will picket with the LONE WOLF if he can outline a clear plan of action and expected results.

I commend his bravery and condemn his execution.

KEEP UP THE PRESSURE Lone Wolf Protestors!!! Some people would like to join you, but because of fear of victimization (losing their jobs etc) they cannot join you. What you are doing takes a lot of guts and courage. Some day we Antiguans will hopefully look back and appreciate the role you're now playing. KEEP UP THE PRESSURE!!! These politicians MUST realize that they are accountable to the PEOPLE. They must stop this "me can do as me feel" attitude (i.e. not getting Parliamentary approval for the Chinese reject plant). In the pursuit of "truth and justice," and the "Antiguan way," not ALL "actions" will be "appropriate," according to those in society that stays on the "sidelines" and watch the country goes up in "smoke!" We may not "agree" with the Lone Wolf but what are we doing "physically" to help in getting "answers" about WPP? The Finance Minister's actions, as a elected representative and possible (???) PM of this country should have stay "in-line" and not engaged in conduct of the "lowest-degree" of "cussing" the people! Yet, again, some of our politicians can't help themselves to show that they are riding the "tallest-horse" in these lands!

scientific vs trial & error

#3 Jumbee Picknee » 2012-07-17 07:57

Greetings, One Aim, One Truth, One Destiny. As I stated, the Scientific and Trial & Error methods will both solve the same problem, just from a different method. Gaston (Mr. Scientific) is worried, that LoneWolf (Mr. Try-a-Ting, D. L Paynes motto) is raising up a fire ants nest in the ALP similar to the Tea Party within the Republican Party of the USA. LoneWolf's method may not be kosher or scientific, but in the World of politics where name recognition, legacy and money, which Vere C. BIRD III has, can be used to solve some of our Nations ills. Gaston knows this, and he is aware, that if he is not tactfull both his legacy and method can be consumed by the LoneWolf's method

A lot of people will not understand Lone Wolf tactics, but it is to do just what it is doing. It is brash, harsh and aggressive. Now if you look at the WHY? WPP, Fences and other serious allegations made against the government, if those allegations are true would you say they are also brash, harsh and aggressive? His base is young people who would ask that same question of Lovell because it denotes disrespect which by the way is what they, Lone Wolf have determined the people of ANU is receiving. The tactic is psychological, and designed to get a response that show what kind of politicians we have. Lone Wolf does not represent Antigua so. it would be up to the minister to maintain his composure and show his character. The real issue is not Lone Wolf, they did not break the law.
